Slideshows Magical Musical Instruments
Eliza Hurwitz

When people think of their favorite musicians they tend to think of singers, guitarists, pianists, drummers etc. I used to play the trumpet and I always felt overlooked. Nobody really wanted to listen to me play; in fact, people would find the noise obnoxious and tell me to stop.

Therefore, for today’s gallery, I’ve decided to display the weirder and lesser known about musical instruments that don’t get the recognition they deserve. Sure, rock and roll guitar players can be pretty attractive, but you know what’s hotter? A player of vegetables. Do you or did you play a musical instrument?

  1. It’s nice that you mentioned the Alphorn (or as you described it, the “hardcore trumpet playing” :D ).
But it’s a real shame that the trumpet isn’t appreciated in your area. Here, in Austria and the alpine countries in general, the trumpet is a very important part of traditional music. As an example, the “Trumpet Echo”: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QR7qBCISWkE (I love it!^^)

  2. I have always love the sound of the trumpet especially in a particular band; Cake. They are a kind of alternative jazz, Check them out and also great post!

  3. Some other lesser-known/appreciated instruments also include the theremin and the hurdy gurdy.
Trumpets, unfortunately, tend to get overlooked in mass media, but clearly are very important in the jazz and classical world (also a bit in the indie world, too).

  4. I never did learn how to play an instrument.
