There’s a movie in the works about Lucille Ball that’s being written by Aaron Sorkin, with Cate Blanchett attached to star — and we’re just so overwhelmed, because this sounds like a truly ~magical~ project.
Deadline reported that Amazon Studios bought the rights to Lucy and Desi, a drama based on the real-life marriage between Ball and her I Love Lucy co-star Desi Arnaz.
The studio is in the middle of casting Arnaz, and word is that Javier Bardem is in the mix, which makes us want to yell out a big YES. YES. YES. They’re also on the lookout for stars to play Vivian Vance and William Frawley (aka I Love Lucy‘s other legendary TV couple Fred and Ethel).
Fair warning, by the way, that there probably won’t be a ton of signature I Love Lucy quips and gags in this retelling. Instead, the movie will chart the couple’s tumultuous relationship, which began on the set of the 1940 film Too Many Girls and ended twenty years later in divorce.
Their problems, according to Bart Andrews, an author who wrote extensively about I Love Lucy, revolved around “booze and broads.”
“She told me that by 1956 it wasn’t even a marriage anymore,” Andrews recalled to People. “They were just going through a routine for the children.”
Ball and Arnaz’s children Lucie Luckinbill and Desi Arnaz Jr. are working on the authorized telling, but that’s about all we know for now. We can’t wait to see this all unravel on-screen, and will be keeping a close eye out to see who will assume the role of Arnaz.
