The ’90s are back, you guys. It’s true. Just take a look around – the Spice Girls are performing again, No Doubt has a new album coming out, the Beverly Hills, 90210 cast is featured on the new Old Navy commercials (and Jennie Garth and Luke Perry are collaborating on a new sitcom), Backstreet’s Back (also in Old Navy Commercials…ON Ad team is rocking it, huh!?) neon and denim and neon denim are in, and Bill Clinton is speaking at the Democratic National Convention like he never left office.
What’s happening? Awesomeness, that’s what. Ever since the Spice Girls brought down the house at the Closing Ceremonies of the London Olympics, they have been on a steady rotation on my iPod at the gym. And by steady rotation, I mean pretty much constant play. How could I forget how fun and good their songs were? Also, how awesome is Spice World the movie? Really, go back and watch it again…try catching all the cameos by big time Brit stars and tell me you’re not in love. Meat Loaf is their bus driver, it does not get any better!!! I will admit, I was always more of an N’Sync fan and sought the Spice Girls out for their dance music. But, I’m a little bit ashamed of myself for leaving them locked away in the early ’00s, and not really looking back. So much girl power, or grrrl power if you will, pumping out of my earbuds and into my heart. Posh, Ginger, Scary, Sporty and Baby, I’m glad you’re back! You all look super fabulous and fit. Now, let’s start another reunion tour, shall we?
Also rocking my heart, Jason Priestley and his baby blues lighting up my TV screen once again. Brandon Walsh, you always had my heart, even though Dylan was the bad boy with the heart of gold. These new Old Navy commercials pitting the two studs together again to win the affections of one Kelly Taylor are genius. And post-divorce Jennie Garth is rocking some serious bod. If you’re not old enough to understand just how genius they are, then put down your computers and pick up some DVDs! I’ve particularly enjoyed catching re-reuns on SoapNet and wish with all my heart Netflix would pick up the series on their Instant Watch (Netflix, are you listening?). Beverly Hills, 90210 is the classic teen soap upon which all teen soaps have been based. Yes, even my fave, The OC. Everything Gossip Girl and The OC, One Tree Hill and the new 90210 has done, was done already by the original.
Who woulda thought that Sugar Ray and Everclear would be touring again? I didn’t, but they did. The Summerland Tour kicked off this summer and toured the country featuring sets from Marcy Playground, The Gin Blossoms, Lit, Sugar Ray and Everclear. I got tickets for $20 and enjoyed a fun night reliving Mark McGrath’s glory days with my friend in the warm summer air. It was a fun trip down nostalgia lane that us both wishing we could go back in time to life before student loan debt and the job hunt. Marcy Playground surprised us both with a genuinely good set we hadn’t expected- too bad they were a one hit wonder, they might still be around if they had gotten more airplay. Everyone in the crowd seemed to enjoy a fun trip down memory lane and Art Alexakis seems like the nicest guy to ever call himself a rock star.
All in all I’d say I’m pretty happy with this little mini-resurgence of the ’90s. It’s a nice distraction from all the politics and unemployment and general unease of the world. The ’90s were a simpler time where everyone had more fun, gas was ridiculously, sickeningly cheap and there were some unfortunate sideburns. I say let’s keep this going as long as we can!
There are so many more events I could talk about, so bust out your denim jackets and your flannel and let me know your favorite ’90s revival moments!
