ITEM OF THE DAY Item Of The Day: Underground New York Public Library Rachael Berkey

Are you a tumblr addict?

Do you scroll through your dash endlessly or through the tumbl blogs of specific people looking for just the right thing to share with your followers or just things you want to remember next week?

If you’re like me, you do both of these things, and if you’re enough like me that I start humming songs from the Single White Female soundtrack, you spend a lot of time on books blogs. There are many kinds of book blogs on the internet: pretty pictures, wise quotations and pairings of pop culture and books that make you chuckle or spit out your coffee.

But if you want to see something really cool, check out the Underground New York Public Library. Ourit Ben-Haïm started the project in 2008 with a Facebook photo album before moving it to tumblr. She photographs readers as they ride the subways of New York City and links the photos to both WorldCat (so you can find the book at your local library) and Amazon (so you can purchase the book). The blog itself as a FAQ page with lots of interesting questions from how she started to the camera she uses to the legality of photographing strangers who may or may not know she’s there.

This blog has become one of my favorite escapes on tumblr, and I hope you’ll check it out. If nothing else, seeing what other people are reading might give you some ideas for the next thing you’re going to pick up.

FYI: The blog is not affiliated with the actual New York City Public Library.
