Most of the stuff I buy doesn’t have a story. Most of it is just stuff. Brand new, made in bulk, and sold from giant chain stores at unbeatably low prices. I never really think about where my purchases come from or how they’re made. I should though. Especially considering how some purchases could positively impact the lives of others.
Noonday Collection is an accessories company that uses the creative design talents of artisans in impoverished communities to bring unique items to its customers. And the artisans are given health and education benefits as a way to take care of their families. Every item they sell has a story. Between the story of the materials used, to the story of the designer, you instantly feel a strong connection and level of respect for the piece that you’re buying.
I fell in love with the Two Coins Necklace the moment I saw it. The necklace features two coins made from upcycled artillery and modeled after genuine Ethiopian currency. The necklace itself was made using recycled nickel, copper, and bronze melted down from previous war weapons.
Most of the artisans who created the pieces are HIV positive and receive healthcare and literacy training in addition to job training.
It’s an honor to display this piece of history around my neck and share its story with the people I meet. It’s a story that needs to be told.
