ITEM OF THE DAY Item of the Day: Jeni's Ice Cream Kerry Winfrey

It might be Fall now, but that doesn’t mean the need for ice cream has disappeared. I mean, I’m only speaking for myself here, but I need ice cream on the reg regardless of season. Even though plain old chocolate and vanilla are great, you can only eat them so many times before they start to get boring. If you’re suffering from an existential bout of ice cream ennui, never fear; Jeni’s will save the day.

Jeni Britton Bauer, a woman whom I thank daily for her contributions to the field of ice cream, started the company in Columbus, Ohio. Jeni’s offers unique flavors and ingredient combinations you won’t find anywhere else. One of their most popular flavors is Salty Caramel, but they also offer such delights as Goat Cheese with Red Cherries, Bangkok Peanut and Wildberry Lavender. My favorite flavor only shows up in the fall–Sweet Potato with Toasted Marshmallow. It might sound a little weird, but it’s fantastic.

If you’re just into the classics, don’t worry: Jeni’s offers a delicious vanilla and chocolate. And if you’re lactose intolerant, Jeni’s offers a Riesling Poached Pear sorbet that’s delicious and dairy-free.

Jeni’s has several shops in Columbus, but they ship all over, so you can order your very own pint of Salty Caramel and have it shipped right to your freezer. Or if you’re feeling industrious, you can buy Jeni’s James Beard award winning book and make your own ice cream at home.
