ITEM OF THE DAYItem of the DaySarah Heyward

Lite Brite, Lite Brite, turn on the magic of colored light! I found a vintage Lite-Brite in a thrift store in Iowa City the other day and I can’t stop thinking about it. Remember how hypnotically soothing it was to put the little colored pegs into the black screen, trying so hard to wait until you were done before turning it on and seeing it all lit up?

The new ones come in a cool cube shape. Get one here.

  1. Dear Sarah Heyward,

Should time travel ever become a reality, you will be my bff once we travel back to the 90′s.

  2. LOVE IT. I remember getting so confused by the little letters… was “P” pink or purple? Then I had the revelation that P was for Pink and V was for Violet

  3. I still have mine…In that box! lol I’m fairly certain I still have a picture I did from when I was little on it. =o)

  4. OMG yes !! I remember playing with this and loving it <3

  5. My great grandmother had one of these! We played with it every time we went to her house. My cousins and I even fought over who would get it if we found it while cleaning out her house after she passed away. We found the pegs, but no lite brite.

  6. I bought an original Lite Brite from Ebay last summer. My girls (ages 6 and 4) LOVE this thing! The package included original black light patterns, and I have had a blast playing with it all over again.

  8. “Lite Brite…….making things with Lite. Outasight, makin things with Lite Brite!” I’m so jealous of your awesome thrift store find. I loved mine and played with it all the time in the ’70′s. I found an online “simulator” on but it’s just not the same.
