Item of the Day: Joico Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor

I don’t like to spend a lot of money on my hair. I know there are some amazing products out there. Yet I opt for Conair styling tools. I buy hair-ties from the dollar store. My styling products are whatever drugstore brand was on sale at Target (best store ever). I use Suave shampoo and conditioner that allegedly works as well as Aveda. Not that I would know – I’ve never felt compelled to pay for Aveda.

But all bias aside, my hair is pretty fantastic. It’s long, healthy, shiny and resilient. It’s not genetics. I dealt with unruly, frizzy, brittle hair well into my early 20’s and have the photos to prove it. I credit my lush locks to a splurge-worthy secret weapon that I’ve been using for years and refuse to live without: Joico’s K-Pak Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor.

The Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor is one of Joico’s most well reviewed products. It’s won a Stylist Choice Award from as the Best Deep Conditioner nine years in a row. The Reconstructor contains a high concentration of Joico’s special Quadramine Complex. According to Joico’s website:

“Quadramine Complex is the scientifically proven key to the effectiveness of Joico’s hair care products, which incorporate Human Hair Keratin Protein in a wide range of molecular sizes to suit every hair care need. Joico hair products actually repair damage to hair while you are styling it, at every step of the way from shampoo to adding hair color products to final blow-drying.”

In other words, the Reconstructor actually sticks proteins back into your hair, repairing it at the molecular level. Strong hair looks and feels better, and it is better suited to resist damage from sun, wind and styling.

I picked up a bottle of the Reconstructor after a stylist, appalled at the state of my split ends, applied it liberally prior to my haircut. You could instantly feel the difference. Unlike some treatments, my hair didn’t feel greasy or over-conditioned. It felt stronger and more manageable. And it smelled like a banana smoothie! I purchased a bottle after my haircut, which is the one and only time that has ever happened. I found that even with my drugstore brand hair products, my hair maintained its quality from the day of my salon treatment.

I’ve been using the Reconstructor weekly for the last few years. Despite my nearly daily use of my budget flat iron, I only need a trim every other month to cut off minor breakage and keep my ends looking fresh. I’ve had a few girlfriends ask me how I’ve managed to grow my hair so long while maintaining its health and thickness, and I’m happy to enlighten them. I’ve even had four different stylists ask me what shampoo I use to keep my hair in such good shape. You should have seen their faces when I said “Suave.”

I didn’t tell them about the Reconstructor, though. We’ll let that be our little secret.
