ITEM OF THE DAY Item of the Day: Betta Fish Annie Stamell

I don’t know about you guys but I spend a lot of time thinking about how I want a dog. But as badly as I want one, I know I’m just not quite ready to be taking care of a puppy. So instead, I recently got a Betta Fish at the local aquarium! I named him Haruki Murakami (which is meant to be both ironic and completely sincere. I’m complicated, okay?). While he’s not quite the same thing as a dog, having a little pal around certainly makes life a little more fun! Also – you get to decorate an underwater sea home for a little miniature marine animal! And that’s just great. For more about Betta Fish, click here.

  1. It’s funny that I’m not the only one who thought about getting a betta fish because I couldn’t handle having a dog. We might be cosmically connected. ;)

  2. i think it’s a little disturbing that a living creature is being labeled “item of the day.”

  3. OMG what a perfect name! He’s my favorite. I just got a betta, too. I named him Call me Fishmael.

  4. OMG! Awesome Item of the Day! I’m actually going to go get a fish this week myself! Yay, pets!

  5. I feel ‘Haruki Murakami’ is ironic in the fact I have no idea what it means. Alas though, I’m a huge fan of Bettas and have had many through out the years (and no I didn’t kill them, sometimes I had more than 1 at a time because 2 of everything is better.) They were my buddies in college, is that sad? If so, I don’t care. It felt so right.

  6. I had one named Gormogon but he died. I now have one named Alfie.

  7. I have a blue Betta named Marissa that I treat as if she is a person. I’ve moved her across the state so many times over the past two years, as I go back and forth to college, that she even has her own designated Tupperware “carseat”. It may seem a little silly but Bettas are definitely the best “transitioning into adulthood” pet EVER.

  8. Betta fish are the best kind of fish ever. They are so easy to take care of and require very little attention. I’ve had mine (his name is Felix) for two years now. I put a SpongeBob figurine and an otter figurine in the bottom of his tank. It’s too cute!
