Interview with Internet Sensation Issa Rae The Conversation

The funny and talented creator of the popular web series The Mis-Adventures of Awkward Black Girl Issa Rae opens up about the genesis of her show and the roots of her awkwardness:, going to high school in Compton and being labeled “white people funny”, due to her love of Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm. Rae revels in the freedom the internet provides women like her (and Amanda), saying: “The Internet is where you can find what you’re not seeing in TV and film. I’m a fan first; I didn’t see any content of color that I could relate to.”

Though the popularity of her series got her network executive meetings, she shared some of the stories from the trenches, including re-casting the Awkward Black Girl herself: “Executives don’t think black people are mainstream enough. The ‘black’ turns people off. Someone said, ‘Call it Awkward Girl.’ Just the idea that someone not watching something because of the ‘black’ is in the title is a rejection.”

In Amanda’s signature closing questions, Issa reveals her worst vice (social media), her best advice and advice to her 14 year-old self…and of course, her favorite sex position. : After much thought, Issa reveals: “I thought I made one up…it involves a chair, I don’t know what it’s called. He sits on the chair, you sit on top.” Amanda recommends calling it “Doing the Issa.”
