Milk and Cookies and an Instant Movie
Instant Movie: Scream (1996)
by Myrna Valadez
Do you like scary movies? Well then, I think you’ll be pleased with this week’s Instant Movie selection. I was never a fan of slasher movies, they’re so messy. There is one exception and that is this week’s Instant Movie: Scream! Yes, growing up in the ’80s, all the slasher flicks were literally just that. There were no witty lines, colorful characters or just a little bit of comic relief. In other words, they’re intense. Along came the ’90s and slasher got a little more interesting – blood and guts just wasn’t enough anymore. Wit and cute boys became essential to the storyline in the ’90s and I gotta love Scream for that! Why watch:
- Drew Barrymore’s chilling opening scene. It started off cute, then it went all wrong.
- Would it be TMI if I mention the twist?
- Neve Campbell is pretty much a total badass in this movie, a change of pace for her at the time. She was usually sighing heavily on Party of Five.
- The Scream soundtrack is especially dark but fun, featuring Alice Cooper and Nick Cave.
- Lastly, all the sequels! Equally chilling and just as fun to watch!
Be brave. Make some popcorn, grab the milk & cookies and cuddle up on the couch. Oh, make sure you’re not alone – it might a little too scary to watch all alone! Enjoy!

the best part of that movie is still skeet ulrich
The first time I saw this, I was 13/14 and my mom was kind enough to let me buy it from Pay-Per-View in 1996/1997. My mom and sisters had gone across the street to talk to the neighbors or play with their friends, so I was alone. I was so freaked out that when my mom came in through the garage door (without spoiling anything she literally came in after the garage scene in the movie), I screamed bloody murder and shot straight up in the air. And 16 years later, it’s still one of my favorites.
agreed with shannon. he is one fine piece of ace.
