Remember the days when fitting in was super important? When it didn’t work out for those of us who didn’t actually fit in, we retreated to our rooms and drowned our sorrows in books and Morrissey songs. As we grow older, it’s easier to see that being who we are is pretty darn cool and looking back at those desperate times is just plain embarrassing. Which brings me to this weeks instant movie selection, Muriel’s Wedding (1994). Muriel is just like many girls: socially awkward, insecure, and in love with a guy she thinks is perfect, but will she realize that just being herself is good enough? Hmmm, you should watch and find out! If you’ve seen this movie already, here are some reasons to watch again:
- It’s all Abba from beginning to end. It’s cheesy, I know, but I can’t help loving it!
- Like most of my favorite films, there is a wonderful subplot about finding your BFF.
- The movie is set in Australia so everyone has the cutest accents!
- I’ve yet to decide if the fashion is really really bad or really really good, I may need some feedback on this for clarity.
- You’ll both empathize and cheer Muriel on, I mean that’s just like the rules of feminism!
Check your insecurities at the door, grab a box of Girl Scout cookies and a wine glass full of milk (because we deserve the good china everyday) and watch the tale of a girl becoming herself.

Oh god, this is one of the best movies in the history of the universe – also glad you love our accents
So quotable as well, I’d say “you’re terrible Muriel” has stayed in the vernacular – at least in my family it has. Can’t hear “Ave Maria” now without giggling.
the fashion is really, really bad- in a really, really good way. Love this movie.
Yeah, I was leaning towards bad but I’m not going to lie, I’ve seen some of this fashion in LA…that doesn’t make it good though, right?
I just re-watched this movie a few weeks ago. Then I heard “Dancing Queen” on the radio this morning and have been seriously contemplating watching it again. Then I saw this post. Unfortunately I can’t watch it now, as I’m about to embark on a Harry Potter marathon.
PS: Rachel Griffiths kicks SO MUCH ASS in this movie!
Yes! I love Rachel, especially after watching Six Feet Under!
one simple reason to watch it (besides being AWESOME) ? Toni Colette
Nuff said
This is one of the best movies evarrrr.
this movie has always been one of my favorites! I’ve got it on VHS… should really find it on dvd!
I am so agreeing with you this movie is awesome. I seen it a few times and it never get’s old.She is the underdog who you want to come out right at the end
I think every girl should watch this movie because we’ve all been there.
I love this movie! I’m an Aussie (glad you like our accents
) and we actually studied this film in English class in one of my last years of high school. Always great to sing along to the Abba songs…”You’re terrible Muriel!” (this became a pretty popular phrase in Australia for a while).
I might just have to rewatch the movie this weekend now!
Yes, your accents are adorable!
