Milk and Cookies and an Instant Movie Instant Movie: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) Myrna Valadez

If I could delete someone from my life, I would. In a heartbeat. I’d pluck people out of my life with giant tweezers and never look back. The annoying neighbor, the chatty landlady, the psycho co-worker…poof! All gone. No regrets. I would, however, keep all the relationships I’ve ever had that involved love: friends, family and boyfriends. Those, no matter how great or how painful, are the ones that stick. This week’s instant movie deals with just that; trying to forget the unforgettable.  Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) is a beautifully crafted film that deals with love and all its complexities. Of course, you want to find that our for yourself right? Why watch:

  1. Kate Winslet has ever-changing hair color. One minute it’s blue, the next red then orange. Oh wait, is that their way of showing time passing in the movie? I get it now.
  2. Jim Carrey is most known for his comedic roles. Every now and again, he dives into the serious role like in The Truman Show and he totally nails it. Every time. He does it once again here.
  3. For those of you girls who are hopeless romantics…it’ll fade. Only joking, ladies! How can we possibly NOT be hopeless romantics when love conquers all? EVEN SCIENCE! All of the best movies conquer science!
  4. Those of us who are in the know are very aware that Jon Brion is an immensely talented musician. He’s everywhere, you just don’t know it. Next time you hear Rufus Wainwright, Fiona Apple, Elliot Smith and Kanye West think of this guy, you know you’re getting a quality film score with this guys reputation alone!
  5. And lastly, anything Michel Gondry directs is worth watching. The dude is a visionary.

So gather up the snack wells and that goblet of milk. It’s time to strap yourself into the couch and behold a good ol’ fashioned love story set in our crazy modern times.

  1. This is one of my favorites <3

  2. My favorite! My heart breaks every time I watch Joel trying so hard to hide Clementine in his memories.

  3. I love this movie! I remember being 15 and watching this for the first time. There was this guy I had a major, major crush on in high school and I had found out he was dating a girl a grade under me. I remember wanting to erase him from my memory, so I turned on the tv to try to forget him and the strangest thing happened. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind was on tv and I had just caught it in time to watch the entire movie. So far I have never seen it back on tv. I like to think it was there in the right time to help ease the pain of that heartbreak.

  4. love this movie so much i have the “eternal sunshine” tattooed on me.
    mmm so good.

  5. This is my favorite movie of all time. Love it!

  6. love this film that would also be a cute Halloween costume that only cool people will get :)

  7. This movie is my absolute favorite movie. It’s the reason my husband and I started talking in the first place. My cat’s name is Clementine(because she’s a vindictive bitch, truth be told), and when he heard this we realized we both loved this movie, and voila! four and half years later, we be married. But really, such a fantastic film.

  8. My favorite movie, definitely. Another reason to watch it is because there are definite hard parts that all couples hit and it’s so realistic it’s painful (especially the “I’ll get bored” part, which terrifies a lot of couples.)

  9. One of my favorites!

  10. Absolutely my favorite movie. And yes, it was from 2004.

I would like to add #6 – This movie was written by Charlie Kaufman, who also wrote Being John Malkovich and Adaptation and other movies that are unusual and thought-provoking. Considering how ESSM won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay, I think it’s worth mentioning (and giving kudos to) the writer :)

  11. Great movie – one of my favorites, but I do believe it came out in 2004.

  12. Fav film. This film has made my cry more than anything in my life.

  13. This is possibly my favourite film, it looks beautiful and I adore the concept. Excellent choice!
