Teenage Wasteland

I Like Your New Hair, Miley

A few days ago, Miley Cyrus cut her hair short. Really short. Was it for a movie, or was it because she just wanted to? Is it because she wanted to give it to cancer patients? Is it because Liam wanted her to? Regardless of why she did it, IT’S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!

I think her new hair is really cute, and so does she. Judging by her tweets and all her pictures, it seems like the happiest she’s been in a while. So why is everyone hating on her?? FIRST OFF, she’s Miley Cyrus, and she’s probably accomplished more in the last 5 years than you ever will be. SECOND, it’s her hair, and she can do whatever she wants with it. THIRD, she rocks it. So please… just stop. Please.

People are even saying she looks like Draco Malfoy… What the (insert swear here)?! Whoever thought that “insult” was going to be offensive was wrong, because Tom Felton is really hot.

I like her hair a lot. I think it suits her and I don’t think anyone should be allowed to judge her. I tried short hair a few years ago, too, and it was really bad… but hers is really good…. so I’m kind of jealous. And everyone else should be, too. She looks amazing. I’m not clear to why she has so many haters… she’s done some wild things, but she’s also an adult. So give her a break. I LOVE YOU AND YOUR NEW HAIR, MILEY!

I agree! Love her and her hair.

I get that you’re trying to stick up for her and that’s great but no need to put people down while you do it: ” …she’s probably accomplished more in the last 5 years than you ever will be. ” Kind of discredits your point about not judging others doesn’t it?

    • http://vespers--goodbye.tumblr.com mikaela foster

I wasn’t trying to make that sound offensive, I just meant that she’s accomplished a lot with her life and it’s not really anyone else’s place too judge her. I’m sorry!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=65501687 Alicia Gray

Oy. You’re right, what a statement she put in there. Not a statement from an adult. An opinion is fine, but a bias standpoint is not. I get the author is a kid, but wow. Shocked at this one.

I don’t care what people do with their own hair (personally, I loved her hair before and I don’t like this look) but that comment made me somewhat mad. Being related to Billy Ray Cyrus is what got her almost all of her accomplishments. I highly doubt she would be that accomplished if she wasn’t born into show business. She probably wouldn’t have gotten her own television show when she was like 12.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=510454184 Emily Huth

I didn’t find that statement offensive at all. This is an article about Miley Cyrus’s new haircut, not anything to take seriously guys.

      I like the haircut too!

I try not to get into entertainment news too much. I mean, this was a headline on most news websites. In my opinion, there are are far more important newsworthy articles that can be headlines. However, I like her haircut too. It’s different…and I like when people choose to be different and stand out. GO, Miley…and everyone else who chooses to stray from the norm! =)

You have just described everything I have wanted to say about this situation since she first cut her hair off! Amazing. I love her hair now, I don’t understand why people feel the need to make so many negative comments about it. It’s Miley’s life. You’re also right, it’s Miley freaking Cyrus. She can do whatever she wants just because she’s Miley Cyrus. Completely agree 100& with all of this :-) xx

I love her hair cut. just like I love her tattoos. It’s her business what she does with her body and even if she’s not even 21 yet. so what? She still has waaaaay move responsibility on her shoulders than most girls her age and also has to live w/ all the judgemental crap being said about her. I personally am pulling my hat for her

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500417961 Brittany Andersen

Is anyone else concerned that this haircut looks like a nazi youth? I’ve noticed a number of hipster girls trying to rock it and I find it creepy.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001006701566 Shanna Hamilton

This I can live with, she at least went fully committed. She wanted it short, she got it short, and she can style it. What I am seeing a lot of, that I hate, is girls with long, beautiful, thick hair who shave one side of it randomly like Skrillex. Why? Why why why why why?! I’d kill for hair like that, and then you do that? And what happens when you decide you’re over it? You have this patch on the side of your head that’s going to stick out as it grows, or you’ve gotta chop it all off for an even growth.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1357445760 Laura Schulte

if you argue like that you’d have to be concerned about anybody sporting an undercut or a brown jacket. or simple up-dos for that matter

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=80000023 Val Ieum

It’s bad. I mean, it’s REALLY bad…BUT on the flip side, I really couldn’t care less how she styles her hair, because anything this girl does will get plastered on the front of every media site imaginable when in fact there are SO MANY MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT. Really. Honestly, whatever. It’s hair. It grows. If she’s happy about it, mazel tov to her. I believe it looks like she got drugged up, dumped a bottle of peroxide haphazardly on her head then proceeded to try and correct said peroxide mistake by drunkenly mishandling an electric shaver, but hey, that’s just me….

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=515973237 Karis Isolde Funk

I think it looks great. The only reason people don’t like it is cos they think Hannah Montana when they see her, and now she looks nothing like Hannah Montana.
But guess what, She’s not hannah montana, she’s Miley Cyrus and she has the right to change her hair just as any of us do. I think she rocks it. Sometimes we all need a drastic change in our lives, and hair is the easiest way to do so.
    Rock on, Miley!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1448774953 Allie Clouspy

Along with several other comments I also would like to point out that putting others down does not prove anything. Being accomplished isn’t something universally definable. The feeling of accomplishment depends an individuals values and beliefs. Ok? Ok. Have a wonderful day. And keep writing! :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001252073512 Amie Estes

Meh. It looks okay I guess… The picky side of me wants to correct everyone calling it a pixie cut though! When I think of pixie cuts, they’re short all over… This seems like more of a bob combined with an undercut to me.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=86400049 Katie Gray

I think someone who can be in the media and be that ok with herself to cut her hair and love it even though she knows she’s going to get a lot of back lash must be an amazing person. I think it’s a testament with how comfortable she is with herself and how much she lives for her and not anyone else. In that aspect, I love this hair cut. :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=528030238 Robin Epley

Ohhhh, honey. I shouldn’t have even had to look to see that you are 13.

I want you to go watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHmvkRoEowc

and then think about this article you wrote really, REALLY hard. Then come back in 10 years.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=23216640 Amy Danielle

No need to be rude. This is one of the brighter kids of her generation, and the fact that she’s sticking up for someone who’s getting a lot of hate for doing her own thing is a really big thing for someone that young. And “oh honey” is *always* degrading. We get it! You’re probably an adult. Congratulations. Why don’t you start a career at 13 years old and see what you come up with?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=528030238 Robin Epley

I’m not trying to be rude, I’m pointing out the life lesson of being 13 and posting something that a lot of people are going to disagree with, and then voice those opinions. But you can’t post something that says “Everyone is free to do what they want” and in the same breath get mad at people who do what they want by saying they don’t like something.

I’m a writer, and I started very young too. I routinely cringe at things I posted back then, but don’t apologize for your opinion Mikaela, you have a right to it like everyone else. Never apologize for it, but don’t seek to make other people apologize for theirs.

(Also, if I may give a bit of advice, never read the comments on your own stories/articles. It’ll just depress you.)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002230055969 Mikaela Foster

Thank you for your positive insight on my article… I didn’t mean for anything in this article to sound offensive, and although to some people it did, I have already apologized. I was simply stating that with everything she’s accomplished, people shouldn’t be judging her. And thank you, Amy!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=571440065 Bethany Bellows Tranby

Hey Mikaela, good writing! I really appreciate you sticking up for somebody, even somebody famous. It’s always easier for people to be negative and it takes guts to stand up. Plus, people thought enough about what you wrote to comment on it! Thought provoking! Way to go!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=825423677 Jennifer Gonzalez

I LOVE her new haircut!! It’s very cute! I’ve always loved short hair, that’s why I recently cut my long locks to a short bob…and I love it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1477969627 Wendy Diaz

Well, she is in the headlines all the time, her name is in that “famous” category. Everybody judges famous people, get used to it, guys. We all know this. For Miley, I’m pretty sure she’s saying to herself, fuck the haters, too. She’s obviously her own person. Oh, and yes, her hair is freaking adorable! I always wanted to cut my hair like that but I am pretty chicken shit to do something dramatic like that.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=594540734 Sydni Louise Schiavone

No offense, but you can kind of tell your age. Not only did you use the term “haters”, which no one uses in the real world, but I don’t think you thought your side through very clearly. You said “she’s an adult, it’s her hair, she can do whatever she wants with it.”. Yes it is. And people can say whatever they want about it. It’s freedom of speech. Just like you have the right to say what you just did, (although in my opinion, not very well thought out and someone childish) and just like I can say what I’m saying now. Not only that… but this haircut is horrifying. It looks like a blind person cut it.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=510454184 Emily Huth

Why does it matter what her age is? I don’t understand the need to debate over this. I’m sure it doesn’t make the author feel good and she was just trying to put out good vibes in to the world, which this comment section is severely lacking.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100002230055969 Mikaela Foster

I’m in 8th grade. I don’t have my MFA. If you expect my articles not to be somewhat childish, you’re setting your standards too high for me. I’m sorry that my article wasn’t adult enough for you, but if you’re looking for an article written by an adult then you probably shouldn’t be in the category “fresh giggles”.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=581486880 Becky Watkins

I’m not sure where this fantasy world is that you live in where people say haters, but in the real world, at least in my nick of it, people do say haters. I say haters. And I’m twice the author’s age, so I don’t think age has any thing to do with it.

Freedom of speech is a legal issue. They are legally free to say whatever they want, but all humans should be respectful towards each other. I don’t know why people think it’s okay to go all crazy on bloggers and celebrities. As if they aren’t real human beings with a soul. Especially when they are young. Especially 13. Being a teenager is hard. Even if they seem strong on the outside, it really does affect them, whether they realize/believe it or not.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. People can think it’s ugly, but that’s no reason to be mean. Would you say such things to a person’s face? Besides a close friend who asks you to be honest? Have you ever been on the receiving end of the remarks that Miley is getting. It doesn’t matter who the person is, we should always practice kindness

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=507262069 Jesica Vaisman

To YOU is ugly. You know, not everybody has the same taste on things. So even if you don’t like it (and you can have your opinion, nobody is saying its right or wrong), that’s not the absolute truth, because there isn’t one. And she never said that people can’t express what they think, but she is pointing that people shouldn’t be so harsh about that kind of thing. Everyone has feelings, and maybe we should try to be more polite with each other and not bash on anyone for dumb reasons, even if they are celebrities. Im sure I wouldn’t like that people were mean to me because of who I am. Its hard being judged all the time.

If Miley is being true to herself, then I think the hair is great. I just hope, as she breaks away from her old image, that she doesn’t lose herself going to far in the opposite direction.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=564946736 Kayla Harmon

I just want to say that I think you’re a really great author, especially for your age. This particular post isn’t my cup of tea, but I enjoy the good vibes you’re sending out. You are getting a lot of feedback/comments, some good, some negative. Just take it all with the grain of salt, and keep doing what you’re doing. I can’t wait to see how you progress. Also I really enjoyed your “My so called Life” post.

    To the negative commenters:
I believe the point that she was trying to make was that she liked Miley’s style, and she believes in personal expression. Maybe one sentence in her post came out in a way she hadn’t intended, but the fact that you’re giving her flack for being her age shows poor character, especially since she is quite articulate for a 13 year old.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=581486880 Becky Watkins

People just like to hate on people, probably because they are insecure about themselves and it makes them feel better. Idiots. I hope she ignore the negativity.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000072075927 Kyisha Thompson

The only thing I don’t like about this is the color. It’s TOO blond for her coloring. In all of the pictures I’ve seen since she had it done, she looks washed out. If it were a warmer blond, I’d absolutely love the look because the cut suits her.
