Hurricane Sandy: How You Can Help

In the wake of the devastation already caused by Hurricane Sandy on the East Coast, I’ve never felt luckier or more grateful to be living on the West Coast. I feel even luckier knowing that all of my East Coast friends are safe and sound and with all of this luck on my side, I think it’s only right to pay it forward by donating some relief to help out the people affected.

When it comes to donating money to causes online or via text unfortunately, you have to proceed with caution. Do your research before committing to a donation to make sure that you feel confident the money will go to where you intend it to. With that in mind, here are some great places to start to make donations with and even help volunteer your time to at!

American Red Cross

This one is super easy and won’t break your bank  – just text 90999 to make a $10 donation (as seen above in the donation I made earlier this morning.) $10 will be charged to your next phone bill once you confirm with a YES and you can also sign up to get more text updates on Sandy from the Red Cross.

Feeding America

FOOD!! And water and plenty of emergency supplies that can be distributed to anyone affected by the hurricane who needs it. Donations range from $25 to $1000 if you pledge online or by calling 1-800-910-5524.

Samaritan’s Purse

Many hands make light work and Samaritan’s Purse is holding a “Hurricane Sandy Response” project for volunteers ready and willing to help homeowners in need with debris clean up and mud outs. Sign up to become a first time volunteer here.

New York Blood Center

This one in particular is in need of help ASAP as the New York Blood Center’s supply of blood needs to be replenished – and with all blood drives on Long Island and in New Jersey cancelled, getting donors is critically important both today and the days to come. If you live in the NY area, check out the hours for the donor centers (and which ones closest to you are open) or call 1-800-933-2566.

Remember, every little bit counts and we’re all in this together. Give what you can and be safe.
