HOW TOs HOW (NOT) TO MAKE A YARN CHANDELIER FOR A PARTY
Autumn Reeser

Just to clarify, this is a how NOT-to post, not a how-to, so you probably should NOT try this at home…

As much as I wish I was one of those Martha Stewart girls who could give you all the secrets to a perfect crafty creation, try as I might, I’ve pretty much discovered that a how-not-to post is more in my bag of tricks.  And I’ve decided that this can be just as helpful. Maybe it will give you a laugh today, in which case, I have succeeded. :)

I threw a bridal shower for my sister last month, and it had a crafty, Anthropologie/country/rustic vibe to it. I got it into my mind that I reeeeeeally wanted to make these yarn balls to hang up as a chandelier over the food table. Nevermind that I had 80 million other things to do for the party (you can see the final results HERE), I’m stubborn and I neeeeded these yarn balls. Balls. Just wanted to say it again. Okay, got that out of my system.

Anyway.

They are super-pretty and despite the fact that the ‘recipe’ said to wrap yarn around a beach ball, I figured balloons would work just as well.  Mind you, I don’t have a good track record of following recipes, so this is probably the first place where I went wrong.  Balloon, beach ball, what’s the difference?  I still don’t know, but suffice it to say that balloons DON’T FREAKIN’ WORK in this case.  DON’T TRY THIS AT HOME.  View the results below.

Hmmm.
That is all.

  1. When I was a fashion student a friend of mine (also a fashion student) was creating yarn ball skirts like this! I had to post this on her wall as she had the exact same problems! It was funny (yet not) how disastrous it all was. She found, in the end, that different glues deflate the balloon. I think that’s why they say use a beach ball…Imagine going through this process in the third year of your degree with hand in time looming. BUT she did succeed and they looking AMAZING!!

  2. i tried this a while ago. left it lo dry till the next day. killed the balloon and now its perfect

  3. [...] it out for a short story about my DIY [...]

  4. I made this same mistake.

  5. Quick Tip: Search for the item on Etsy.com, you can usually find someone who can make the craft you want at a reasonable price!

  6. This happened to me as well but with doilies :(

    • I did that one too…the trick is to wait for SEVERAL days, and use a billion coats of glue (I used watered down elmers) It took a week and a half, but it was way worth it!

  7. hahaha ohh that made me laugh
