Shopping for comedy nerds can be hard, especially if you don’t know much about comedy. Also, if the comedy nerd you’re shopping for is like me, then they have probably never revealed any of their comedic obsessions to you, leaving you lost when it comes time to buy them gifts for the holidays that they will actually like. This year, I’ve compiled a list of some of my most sought after comedy gifts this holiday season. So put down that generic mall gift card and pick up some of these instead!
1. Is Everyone Hanging Out With Me? by Mindy Kaling ($15, Amazon)
Funny and relatable, Mindy’s book should be on everybody’s list this year, comedy nerd or otherwise. I’m pretty sure you’ll like this book. What’s not to love?
2. Good One by Tig Notaro ($14, Amazon)
Tig’s debut album, Good One, is nothing short of brilliant. If your comedy nerd is into stand-up, then I’m sure this is already on their list, as she is nothing short of a genius.
3. Louis CK Live at the Beacon Theatre ($5, buy.louisck.net)
Louis CK did something really cool with his newest stand-up special: He made it downloadable in formats that are easy to burn to DVDs and other devices, for only $5. If he had gone through a studio to produce and sell his special, it would have cost roughly $20, so consider this a steal.
4. Portlandia Season 1 on DVD and Blu-ray ($17 DVD, $25 Blu-ray, Amazon)
Has the comedy nerd in your life ever told you to “put a bird on it”? If they have, then you may want to consider getting them this IFC show for the holidays. It will be perfect timing too, as Season 2 starts in January.
5. The Complete Comedy Bang Bang Christmas Collection ($20, Earwolf)
Whether the comedy nerd you’re shopping for is into comedy podcasts or not, this album is still the perfect gift. A collection of all the Christmas songs previously released on earlier albums as well as some new ones, this downloadable CD features some of CBB’s most popular comedians (including Nick Kroll, Paul F. Tompkins, James Adomian, and more). Also, all proceeds from the album go to the LA Regional Food Bank, so buying this also does some good in the world!
6. Marcel The Shell With Shoes On: Things About Me by Jenny Slate and Dean Fleischer-Camp ($13, Amazon)
Originally a viral YouTube sensation, everyone’s favorite tiny shell with a big personality, Marcel, is now a book. If your comedy nerds are young, or old enough to have kids of their own, (or just really love Marcel) then this is the perfect gift for them. Chances are, you’ll fall in love with the miniature mollusk as well.
7. Parks and Recreation: Lil’ Sebastian Stuffed Animal ($19, NBC)
The same plush doll that Ben gave to Leslie in the “Trial of Leslie Knope” episode of this season’s Parks and Rec, this doll gives comedy nerds another chance to commemorate the life and death of that spectacular miniature horse. It’s okay if you don’t understand what that means, your comedy nerd certainly does.
8. Save Community #SixSeasonsAndAMovie T-Shirt ($25, Redbubble)
Community fans recognize that this is the darkest timeline. With Community benched from NBC’s mid-season lineup, your comedy nerd has been in somewhat of a funk recently, am I right? Make them feel like a Human Being again with this t-shirt supporting one of the greatest shows to be taken off the air before its time was up.
