My bologna has a first name, it’s O-S-C-A-R, my bologna has a second name, it’s M-A-Y-E-R… Ohhhhh I love to eat it every day and if you ask me why, I’ll say: ‘Cause Oscar Meyer has a way with B-O-L-O-G-N-A! I really hope everyone just sang along with me. It’s National Bologna Day, after all!
Since the 1400s, Bologna has been pure, sliced joy between two pieces of bread for children and adults alike. We can thank Oscar Mayer for the Americanization of bologna, which is named after the city in Italy. This sensational sausage is usually comprised of finely ground meat (beef, pork, or both) and spices. Oh yeah, and fat. It’s definitely not the most healthy sausage meat to ever be produced… let’s just leave it at that in the spirit of the day. A more modern take on bologna has provided for kosher and halal options, as chicken, lamb, and turkey can be used instead. So, as you can see, bologna can be everyone’s favorite sandwich meat.
How to Celebrate
Why limit the reaches of bologna to a simple sandwich? This deli delicacy can be used in many creative ways, including (but not limited to) barbecued bologna, baked bologna, bologna vegetable biscuits, bologna bean chowder, bologna casserole… but don’t discount the traditional bologna sando. It’s a classic. Nevertheless, find something fun to try and celebrate the day with a deli delicious dinner.
Do that really fun thing that you did as a kiddo where you would bite out holes for eyes, nose, and a mouth in a piece of bologna. It will take you back. I don’t care if your coworker is staring at you funny in the lunchroom. It’s National Bologna Day. Live it up.
Use the phrase “that’s baloney!” as much as possible, even though it has nothing to do with bologna. It’s pronounced the same and it is super fun to say, so who cares?
