Happy Cuddle Up Day!Rachel Hintz

January 6th is Cuddle Up Day!

Why Celebrate?

Who doesn’t like to cuddle? January is the perfect month in which to celebrate cuddling because let’s face it, winter is in full swing now, and it is darn cold outside. The best cuddling weather is at hand, and there is something so warm and comforting about cuddling up and just relaxing. I feel pretty lucky because I have a constant cuddle buddy. My cat. Seriously, she is a cuddling fiend. I can’t even sit down for more than 30 seconds before she is all up in my lap, trying to seduce me into cuddling with her. In fact, guess where she is right now?

Do you know why cuddling can be so calming? Well, apparently, as humans we are hardwired to seek out physical touch. And when we get it, the brain rewards us by releasing a calm-inducing hormone/neurotransmitter called oxytocin. Which is also known as the “cuddle hormone”. So there ya go. Cuddling is good for you.

How to Celebrate

Cuddle up! Cuddling can include, but is not limited to, snuggling up with your cutie, sweetie, honey, best friend, fiancé, spouse, cat, favorite blanket, doggie, ferret, teddy bear, or mommy (hey, I still cuddle with my mommy, any chance I get!). Find an excuse to stay in tonight, turn on a sweet movie or music, light some candles, and break out your favorite blankey. Some hot cocoa or a glass of wine can also help put your in the cuddling mood. Oh, and if you have a fire place… a crackling fire is cuddling gold.
