We would like to wish our co-founder, style hero, musical crackerjack and comedic inspiration, Miss Zooey Deschanel, a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY! The birthday girl has dazzled us in many ways, one of which being her candor. Zooey isn’t afraid to share her thoughts and opinions, and we adore her for that.
On this very special day, we’d like to share some of the best quotes from our fearless leader.
“I’m just being myself. There is not an ounce of me that believes any of that crap that they say. We can’t be feminine and be feminists and be successful? I want to be a f–king feminist and wear a f–king Peter Pan collar. So f–king what?” -February Issue of Glamour Magazine
“I had a party at the American Girl store — recently.” -Us Weekly
“People do think I’m weird. I don’t know why.” -May 2012 issue of Marie Claire
“I don’t know why femininity should be associated with weakness. Women should be free to express who they are without thinking, I need to act like a man, or I need to tone it down to be successful. That’s a very good way to keep women down.” -February 2012 Issue of Allure
“Somebody asked me, “How did you start doing comedy?” and I was like, “By being unintentionally funny.” I think making a movie or a record, the best things happen by accident—and those end up being the magic. Every time I’ve followed my gut it’s been better than when I’ve tried to do what I was supposed to do.” -February Issue of Glamour Magazine
“I hate papaya. I love coffee. I mean, I really love coffee.” -Us Weekly
“Being tender and open is beautiful. As a woman, I feel continually shhh’ed. Too sensitive. Too mushy. Too wishy washy. Blah Blah Blah. Don’t let someone steal your tenderness. Don’t allow the coldness and fear of others to tarnish your perfectly vulnerable beating heart. Nothing is more powerful than allowing yourself to truly be affected by things. Whether it’s a song, a stranger, a mountain, a tea kettle, an article, a sentence, a footstep, feel it all – look around you. All of this is for you. Take it and have gratitude. Give it and feel love. “
We love you, Zooey!
