Maybe it’s just me, but when I used to wear lace, I occasionally felt as if I was dressed like a life-sized version of a Madame Alexander doll. Well, either that or a human version of one of my grandmother’s doilies. But my point is, lace didn’t always scream stylish to me. However, I eventually decided to push my inhibitions aside and start shopping for some lace pieces here and there, and even though I encountered a few items that reminded me of my First Communion dress, I grew to love the fabric in all of its forms. Moreover, I realized just how versatile lace is, and I took cues from four celebrities to demonstrate several ways in which you can stylishly incorporate lace into your wardrobe, too.

One of the most classic lace garments is the white lace dress, and Anne Hathaway shows how a pop of color can transform a traditional ensemble into a trendy fashion statement. Simply choose whichever dress you feel most comfortable wearing (I chose a sleeveless number with a flowy skirt as an example) and add a brightly colored heel. Currently, my favorite heel is the orange-red suede pump from Urban Outfitters, but any solid color or heel size will do for recreating Hathaway’s shoe moment. Additionally, I recommend pairing the dress and heels with neutral accessories in order to highlight the contrast in color. The finished product is a representation of contemporary style with old-fashioned influences (that also successfully avoids looking dowdy).

At The Hunger Games premiere, singer/actress Miley Cyrus was photographed wearing one of summer’s hottest trends: a midriff-baring top and maxi skirt. As a look that has been recently popping up on the music festival circuit, the fitted cropped tank and skirt combo is perfect for channeling your inner hippie, while the black color helps transform the pairing into to a chic nighttime ensemble. However, if you’re not comfortable with wearing the revealing tank or this trend is not exactly your favorite, try pairing the lace skirt with a solid-colored tank or lengthier crop top of your choosing. Lastly, if you decide to go all black, perhaps finish the look with tiny accents of color like these gold and turquoise rings.

While shooting a commercial for Lancôme, Emma Watson wore an adorable pair of lace shorts with a polished blush blazer and white blouse, and I must say, I’m absolutely in love with this look. The incorporation of lace is subtle but still chic, and the blazer and tie give the ensemble a stylish androgynous edge. Also, the look illustrates how separates don’t always need to be matchy matchy; including different variations of white in the same outfit won’t make the look any less fashionable.

Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice wore a coral ensemble to last month’s Kids’ Choice Awards and worked a small amount of lace into her look with a pair of gray lace booties. Lace accessories are perfect for people who believe a little bit of lace goes a long way, and like Justice’s shoes, can add an attractive touch of texture to an otherwise clean-cut look. That being said, lace booties can be easily substituted for lace flats/heels or a lace bag.

Although lace has some old-timey connections to it, with the right styling, it can be worn in a variety of different ways and with a multitude of colors and complementary pieces.
