College college college ack!

Postby Anna » Wed Jun 06, 2012 11:49 am

Okay! Hi. So, I'll be a college freshman this fall. I'm excited! And, basically, I was hoping some of you nice people would have some advice for me (and other freshmen).
I have two main questions:
    1. Are there certain items I should bring that aren't mentioned on most packing lists? Are there certain items that seem necessary but really aren't?
    2. Do you have any general knowledge or advice to share? Beyond the usual "be involved" and "don't put your drink down."

Congratulations on starting college! Where are you going? Is it very far from your family? I stayed local for college so I missed out on the whole dorm experience but from what I've seen from many other people I can say that the partying can get out of hand and your grades could slip. I unfortunately know a lot of people who went away to school but finished their degrees locally. So stay focused and prioritize! If you feel bad missing a party, remember that when you're in the real world you get to go to happy hours after work which I've always considered more fun anyway lol.

Thanks! I'm going to a small private school that's about forty minutes away from home, so I'll be staying in dorms, but I'll be able to go home fairly often if I want to.
I'm not a ~partier~ so I'm not tooo concerned about getting out of hand and whatever, although it's good to remember. I'm sure there will be parties, I just don't know where! There's no greek life.

And yeah, actually a couple of my teachers this past year said that they had to take a break with school because they partied too much/life just got in the way. I'll try not to let that happen!

I really liked college. I think it had a lot to do with my friends. I'm really thankfull for all the people I met in college. Anyway, I know this doesn't happen for everyone, I'm not sure if there was a blog post or a HG article on this. My only advice is be yourself open up to new people and study!!

Congrats girl! College is okay. I suppose it's one of those things where "It's what you make of it". My first line of advice to people wanting to ENJOY the experience to it's full potential is DON'T COMMUTE. I did that to save money and ended up dreading school, along with every other commuter I knew. But I see you're dorming- and every dormer I knew LOVED it; so you're one step ahead! But I unfortunately don't have any other advice on dorming other than... do it.

My second line of advice is consider doing a club... that's NOT greek life. I'm sorry, but I just don't understand the concept of paying money to be in a social circle that takes up EVERY SECOND of your free time. I joined a free political club my first semester and had a blast. :)

I also learned fast that the parties don't amout to all the hype that surrounds them either. I've found that a night with a handful of new friends playing scrabble in someone's apartment is more fun than going a giant, cliquey party that maybe only has a small handful of cute guys. :P

So that's all I have to say about college. I can already tell you'll enjoy it! Study hard... it's more difficult than highschool but it's a lot more liberating!

College is a really exciting time. It's great to experience a change of environment, you get to start new and really figure out who you want to be. I think something surprising about college is how different from high school it is in the way social connections work. I found it more welcoming to a variety of personalities and sometimes the kids that were awkward in high school became the most interesting and cool people to hang out with. So just be yourself and you'll find a group a friends with similar interests to hang out with. Once you make one friend it tends to snowball into a group that sort of becomes family. The number one dead give away and turn off about freshman is that they often try too hard to fit in, but that high school falseness is over just be genuine.

Yes, joining clubs is a great way to meet people and establish yourself in your major. Through art club I got to know all the senior BFA students to learn from their experiences and my art professors forgot I was a freshman because I was so involved. As far as packing, try to bring as little as possible to figure out what you actually use and have space for. Remember you'll end up acquiring things throughout the year ending up with more to move out with. I like to make a trip home for anything I forgot after the first few weeks of getting established.

Good luck, I hope you have great experiences!

Hi! First of all - congrats! Your first semester of college is a super exciting time.

I guess the main thing I want to say here is don't feel scared or nervous. I know it's hard not to - I went from a graduating class of barely 100 students to attending a university of more than 50,000. I know it can be overwhelming, but just remember that there are tons of other freshmen in the exact same situation as you. You're not the only one who has no idea what they're doing, so take advantage of this and make some freshmen friends to make things a little easier on you. That way, you have someone to endure these "firsts" with. Furthermore, it pays off to make friends that are older than you, as well. They know the ropes and it's good to have upperclassmen friends that will be a little more honest with you than say, advisers or other college/university staff that are paid to tell you only certain things (and maybe withhold some of the grisly details).

Secondly, STUDY. I never had good study habits in high school so the first semester of my freshman year was a difficult adjustment for me! Make sure to set aside more than enough time to study. It's not healthy to stress because you know you could be doing better. Sometimes it's okay to pass up social events to get some work done. Then, you have more time to chill and you're stress-free knowing that you're all caught up. However, I guess I might be contradicting myself by saying this, but leave some time for fun, too. Of course focus on doing a good job in school, but when you can afford to take a break, take one. It's not healthy to be constantly working 24/7. You'll exhaust yourself and you'll get cranky and your friends won't want to be around you (trust me, I know from experience). Find a healthy balance between having a social life and studying, and college will be a breeze.

Lastly, I'll leave you with a little bit of wisdom that my uncle shared with me the summer before my freshman year of college: "College is the most amount of freedom you'll ever have with the least amount of responsibility." It sounds obvious, but it's so true. Take advantage of being away from home. Stay out late if you want, but don't sacrifice your grades for it. Be responsible, but realize your parents are still there to help you out. Have fun, make friends, and learn (that's what you're there to do, of course). Figure yourself out. Find out who you are and what you want to do for the rest of your life. This is the last chance you have to really * up and change your mind 100 times before repercussions get really intense. So don't feel bad if you want to change your major 4 times - try out new things, see what you like.

Hope your freshman year goes great! And know that we're all here throughout the year if you ever need more advice. :)
