Non-English music

Postby HuckFinn1 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 2:19 pm

What are some of your favorite groups/performers who don't sing in English? I'm a fan of Manu Chao (although to be fair, some of his stuff is in English). While it's fun to be able to sing along, I think it's the actual music that gets people at a visceral level.

Their songs are gorgeous, in my opinion.

Marco Borsato (Dutch), and there is a Spanish singer and I can't think of his name but he had a couple of nice songs oh and Tiziano Ferro (Italian) also had a couple of nice songs. I like a few Dutch singers, although the main one I like (Anouk) sings pretty much exclusively in English anyway.

Wow you like Dutch singers?! That's so cool. I'm from Holland. I don't like Marco Borsato though. Anouk is really cool. You know Di-rect? You should check them out (I recommend the albums with the new singer. Albums are: this is who we are and time will heal our senses).

I'm semi-fluent in Dutch & I lived in Den Haag for a year and a half, so yeah I like Dutch singers. I also know Blof, Ilse de Lange, Volumia (for the old timers ;) ). I have heard of Di-Rect but don't know much of their stuff I don't think. There were some others I knew songs of, but I don't remember their names. I don't like all of Marco Borsato's stuff - I'm more into upbeat music so with Anouk it's kinda of love/hate. I don't really like her slower stuff as much, but the "heavier" stuff I do quite enjoy - mostly her older songs like "RU Kiddin Me", "The Dark" and that sort of stuff. Do you have any other recommendations for Dutch singers? I need to get some new music! :D

Did you like living in Den Haag? I live near Den Haag..it's called Leiden. I don't like Anouks slower stuff either! The Dark is my favorite song :) Some Dutch artists I like: Acda & De Munnik, Alain Clark, Doe Maar, Herman Brood, Golden Earring [Best Dutch band ever!], C-mon & Kypski, De Jeugd van Tegenwoordig, Destine, Go Back To The Zoo, Kraak & Smaak, Krezip, Racoon, The Sheer, Spinvis, De Staat. Hope you like some of them!

Oh yeah, I know Acda & De Munnik and also Krezip - didn't they break up last year? :( I loved living in DH. I've been to Leiden before once too! My friends in DH took me there - I saw where Bill Clinton ate pancakes :D (and lots of other parts of the town). I'll have to look up some of the other groups you mentioned.

I've been hooked on Carla Bruni ever since my French professor played one of her music videos for us in class. Have you ever listened to Francoise Hardy? I feel like she's the 60s mod version of Carla.

Does anyone have suggestions for German music? I really love Wir Sind Helden and Juli, but the songs I have from them are sort of old and I would love to hear some new stuff!
