GIRLS on HBO

Postby Vanoooo » Thu May 03, 2012 3:01 am

Has anyone been following the show??
I first heard about the show after watching a film called Tiny Furniture which was written, directed, and starred Lena Dunham who is also the creator, writer, and star of GIRLS.
I personally have fallen in love with the show. I thought the pilot and 2nd episode were good but after watching the 3rd episode I really just fell for it. I think its a funny, witty show that really hits at home for me personally.
I think its refreshing to see a young all female cast and I am rooting for it even more since I am a fan of Lena.
Women in entertainment aren't always shown in an "equal" type of way I think. A lot of what we watch in film and TV is picked and controlled by males. I'm not saying that its all this way of course but I think this show is just a good platform into lives of what many young females are going through.

I watched it yesterday and I like it. I like the fact it's different - it's real. It's not all shiny, happy & dreamy. It shows the real life of us 20-something girls. I will definitely watch it. :)
IA person who has good thoughts cannot ever be ugly. You can have a wonky nose and a crooked mouth and a double chin and stick-out teeth, but if you have good thoughts it will shine out of your face like sunbeams and you will always look lovely.

I hate replying after Spam, but whatever. This show is hit and miss for me. It has its moments but there is just some underlying thing that gets under my skin. I really can't pin point it even after I've read many of the criticisms around the internet.

I agree with you almost completely, *. I think I've seen the first four (or five) episodes and while I appreciate the realism, it's almost TOO real for me. It makes me uncomfortable. And I pretty much dislike most of the girls, probably because I recognize myself in most of them.
And I do not want to be a rose.
I do not wish to be pale pink,
but flower scarlet, flower gold.
And have no thorns to distance me,

but be bright,
bright,
bright as yellow,
warm as yellow.

I really like this show and its realism, i see why its gotten so much crap from around the web but honestly... its just pure entertainment to me. The past 3 or so episodes have really made me wish this show was an hour long!

I can't really relate to any of the Girls' particular situations or their lifestyles, and at first thought that was what was bothering me. But how many television shows that I watch (and enjoy) can I actually relate to anyway? It may be that I do relate to the sort of tunnel vision of that age, where other people's problems/lives seem so distant and inconsequential compared to your own. I really think the episode last week highlighted that well and it was the episode I have enjoyed the most. Also Shoshanna running around the streets without her skirt was

Same here 100%. When Hannah and Adam had that conversation about him disappearing and if he did she would never know about it, I literally had the same exact conversation 2 weeks ago with a guy that reminds me of Adam quite a bit (only he wears his shirt more often). And the whole time I was thinking 'This guy is such a jerk' yet how could I judge Hannah when I'm making the same mistakes. It was really upsetting and I don't know if I feel better for watching or not.

I love it. It's funny, smart, Hannah wears cute clothes. The doughnut wallpaper in their kitchen cabinet was adorable. They're all beautiful women who remind me of myself and my friends and people in my life. I mean, straight out of my journal sometimes. Though... Adam disgusted me until he opened up a bit (though that "I'm Sorry" poster thing didn't touch me as it did some others and I think he is quite impulsive and that both impresses and scares me) and I still don't quite understand how Hannah lost her job (when she went cray on her touchy-feely boss). Maybe I need to re-watch that episode. I can understand how the raw moments can irk some people. I mean, I'm always freaking out that someone is going to come in the room when I'm watching it and think I'm watching p-or-n while simultaneously eating yogurt on the couch or that my boyfriend is going to pee on me in the shower (ala Adam)
