You've Got Mail

Postby savgirl04 » Tue Nov 22, 2011 9:02 pm

I loved this "From Our Readers" article so much. It also made me a little sad though. I'm jealous of everyone who has a snail-mail pal to write to. Once one of my friends met a guy from England while we were on vacation and they became pen pals and wrote each other for a year. I was so happy for her, but I wanted one too! I do have friends that live far away from me, but none of them are very interested in kicking it old school and writing actual letters. They prefer to talk on the phone or text. I mean I get it, the convenience and all that, but man....opening up your mailbox to see something other than junk mail or "you owe us $$$!!!!" letters? That's just gotta be the best.

It's not that crazy, right? Wanting to write to someone you've never met and get mail back from them? Surely I'm not the only one who thinks that sounds awesome. People used to do it all the time. And obviously some still do. Reading through the comments I saw that one person referred us readers to postcrossing.com. I went to the site and I think that sounds like so much fun. I'm definitely going to have to try that one. Although I will probably do it from a PO Box. I feel a little uneasy about my address being all out in the open like that. I know I'm probably just being paranoid, but years of watching Cops and America's Most Wanted every Saturday night with my grandparents as a kid has made me this way. (Well, AMW more so than Cops...that show was mostly just funny. But don't even get me started on that Unsolved Mysteries show...horrible things happen and you never find out why, or how, or who? Well, thanks for the nightmares.) I love the idea of getting surprise postcards from random parts of the world so much though that I think opening a PO Box to do it would be worth the sacrifice. It's only like $4 a month though, so I guess it's not really THAT much of a sacrifice.

So is anyone else with me? Do you also secretly long for a snail-mail pen pal too?

Totally! I'd love a pen pal. I'm from Guam, so really any place else would be awesome to get mail from. I'm tired of getting letters which only mean that I owe money to someone.

Cool, I've never met anyone from Guam. Well, if you would like a US pen pal (I live in Georgia) let me know. We could try to work something out. :)

This just made me realize that I am taking for granted something that is truly awesome; I am a West Coaster, transplanted to the East Coast 5 years ago- I left behind a gaggle of amazing sister-friends who have now also transplanted themselves to various parts of the earth. I get cards from them every once in a while. Not long letters, but cards with silly stickers and "I miss you"'s- what a brat I've been for not a) cherishing this and b) reciprocating as much as I should.

With all of our social networking going on, we still crave human interaction; even it's from following the scratch of a pen with our finger, knowing it was scribbled by someone who was thinking of us. :)

Thanks for the reminder!

I'm part of another fourm and became close to a lot of the members. The live in different countries and we send each other letters and gifts for birthdays. This is a cute idea I love it!
