The neverending search for a nail biting cure

Postby Astridtheadventurer » Fri Mar 09, 2012 2:14 pm

I have the worlds worst habit of biting my nails. I don't know when I do it, so I have no idea when I do it.
I've tried what feels like everything, bitter nail coatings, fake nails(they destroy my already brittle nails), i've tried to paint them but their so short I don't want to bring attention to them until they look pretty.
Irritatingly over christmas I managed to get them going and I was really happy with them but now I've found they have all gone again.
Any idea's? I'll pretty much try anything.

I've been biting my nails on and off since I was like, 7 too, and it's been pretty difficult for me to find a solution. Generally speaking I find painting my nails work best, I usually wait until they're reasonably long (i.e. not SUPER short) and then paint them and that helps me to stop biting them as they look nice and painted. I tend to bite my nails when they get longer so I also try to stay on top of nail maintenance by cutting my nails as soon as they are long enough to bug me (I HATE long nails - get in the way of everything).

I don't know what bitter coating you've tried but I work at a pediatric clinic and to help kids stop sucking their thumbs our Dr. recommends Mavala Stop. She's a really big fan of it and it seems to work so I might give it a go if you haven't tried it!

I had very brittle nails due to biting my nails for I think almost 20 years. A friend of mine recommended MicroCell. And that really worked a charm, It is a transparent Nail Polish that helps your nails to grow stronger and faster. Honestly, as soon as I saw how my nails could look if I only gave it a few days time, I stopped biting. I wouldn't have thought that it was possible, but it worked very well for me.

My name is Nicola and I bite my nails. I have recently embarked on my most successful attempt at nail biting cold turkey. In the past I have tried painting on stuff that tastes bitter, but those products just ruined finger food, such as sandwiches and fruit, so I stopped using them. I tried affirmations and telling myself that I may as well lick a toilet seat over and over but there was always that time each day when my stress levels reached a certain level and all of a sudden my feet were surrounded by little keratin crescent moons and my fingers were sore. I just got fed up of being a greb and always slightly less elegant than I knew I could be. I would always look down slightly enviously at a well shaped nail painted in some yummy contemporary shade, like the greys and almost blacks that are available now. I just went out and bought a load of cool coloured nail polishes, files and the like and put it on, regardless of my stubby, baby nails. Four weeks later and they are a pretty normal size. They chip and brake sometimes but I don't give in. Sometimes I get stressed out and find that I have chewed away at the skin around my nails. I'm working on that. I am considering getting a home gel manicure kit. This could be the start of something life long and expensive, but I feel more like a real grown up lady :D

SUGGESTION: Try a nail polish stick-on strip, (such as Sally Hansen Salon Effects Real Nail Polish Strips). They create an instant manicure you just stick on. (Not a fake plastic hard tacky glue on nail, no way, the trips just lay on top of your natural nail (like nail polish). No harsh, expensive salon acrylics for you! The strips have no dry time and lasts up to 10 days. No steady hand or manicuring skill needed! Fast, easy, and looks so cute, you won't want to bite or chew off the nail polish design. Also great for last minute going out on the town nails when you don't have time getting to a manicurist.

PARTY IDEA: Throw a stick-on strip nail party, no special occasion needed, just an excuse to hang with your pals. Have your buds bring their own strips and swap and trade designs with each other. Can you imagine the crazy nails that will be created at this party? Have games like: Throw strips in a bag, each person pulls out ten without looking and has to stick them on even if they look kookyshmooky. Have contest where you are blind folded, and the person who can stick them on straightest wins. Have a speed contest to see who can stick them on fastest. The host of the party can buy extra packs of stick-ons and give as take-home prizes in cute home made gift bags.

:D
