Article about Zooey and Feminism.

Postby angeljenny » Sun May 06, 2012 8:55 am

"Zooey is a bad example for young women, feminists argue, because she is too “girly”, thus solidifying the impression that women are more attractive to men when they embody girly characteristics. The icing on the cake was when Zooey announced in Twitter that she enjoys baking and board games. Ugg - how feminine!"

HOW SAD! A woman, Zooey, is embracing her talents and visions in the way she feels to do so and she is being brought down? She has her own musical career, acting career, manages her own life, happens to dress super cute while respecting her body?! It all screams true feminism to me. :)

I like that article!
I've seen several articles on feminist sites complaining about Zooey, and I feel like it's really..bizarre. There's a quote from Zooey floating around tumblr recently, and I don't know where it's from originally, but I think it's pretty good--although it doesn't directly address feminism, it's related.
Why do I need to be defined aesthetically by someone else’s perceptions of what makes me seem like someone who should be taken seriously? I’m going to wear whatever I want to wear, because I’m expressing myself, and I deserve that right. And I like the way that looks. You’re not demeaning yourself by acting girlie. I think the fact that people are associating being girlie with weakness, that needs to be examined.

So is this saying that women can't be feminine if they want to be feminists? Isn't defining how a woman should or shouldn't look and act the opposite of feminism? I never considered myself a feminist so I'm no expert on the matter but judging Zooey for being girly seems counter-productive.

This is ridiculous!
1. She never claimed to be the perfect image of a woman
2. There are more women on the world who are not as girly as her but still as attractive!
Zooey is a great woman, why blame her?

What does too "girly" even mean?

I have mixed feelings about how Zoe is represented, but in relation to feminism, I would think being true to oneself, unapologetically, would be the epitome of what fame ism is striving for- whether you want to ride a Harley and go on mud runs, or if you choose to bake and knit. This statement, of course, ignores the fact that there's so much more to feminism than just what your hobbies are.

Well.

I happen to like Zooey a lot. This is perhaps not a sign of feminism.

What i like most is her apparent disregard for what anyone else might think of her. She is just being real. Feminism to me is for women to have equal rights as women, equal pay for equal jobs and the reight to be female. It is not about women being men or vice versa.

Gender roles are purely based on culture - if Zooey can be herself in spite of societal expectations and remain an individual, she is hardly conforming to "girly" stereotypes, and isn't any less of a feminist. A feminist is a strong woman who leads by example and who inspires other women to be their own individual selves.
