No sense of style I think :(

Postby adrigil » Sun Apr 15, 2012 8:48 pm

Recently I've been feeling very insecure about how I dress up. The more I see magazines or just the girls at school makes me feel worse. I think my problem is that I don't have a sense of style (which I wish I did) or i need to completely change my wardrobe. I feel pressure because I just turned 20 years old (I look like i'm 16) and I can't wear things that make me look like a little girl. Since I spend almost all day at school I always choose to wear something comfortable like my jeans, vans, and my jacket or sweater since over here is always so cold. But then again, I don't want that to be an excuse, I wanna feel good about myself. :|

I totally understand. I wish I could put together outfits like I see in magazines and fashion blogs, but I just don't have that level of style acumen (not to mention, the funds needed to buy those fly clothes). Like you, I usually wear jeans, an easy top and Converse sneakers. I find ways to express my personal style in the prints I wear and my accessories. I'm drawn to fun, whimsical prints like polkadots, elephants, owls, cats, hearts and florals. And, even if my outfit is simply put together, I throw in a fun, eye-catching accessory that's uniquely me, like my butterfly knife necklace, owl earrings or heart-print sneakers.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that style is your own take on how to dress yourself, not what magazines tell you it's supposed to look like. Think about things you love, then find ways to translate them into your wardrobe.

I don't know where you live, but I'm sure there if you poke around, you can find a personal stylist, life coach, or someone like that to help. I won a consultation with an image consultant at a community faire and after my 3 hour session, she had given me TONS of great ideas about things I should wear. She took into account my height, weight, coloring, activity level, and how committed I was to getting dressed every day to plan out certain things I could always go to in order to feel like I looked put-together. I recently made a friend who does makeovers like these and she'll even do some of the consulting online. I would start there. Plus... don't worry. I'm sure you look cute! I'm 33 and still wear jeans and hoodies most of the time, so work on continuing to spend time developing into an awesome person, and maybe you won't feel so insecure. :-)

Honestly, I have no sense of fashion/style, either. I rely on one of my friends to let me know if something looks good. At 32, I still mostly wear jeans, t-shirts and Chucks. If I have to get dressed up, though, it's full on panic. Especially since I gained quite a bit of wait last year and still haven't lost all of it so I'm working on a limited wardrobe.

Adrigil - Do you think you care because of the magazines and other girls? Are you comfortable in your own style or do you feel pressure? I hit 30 and was kind of like, "* it, I'm doing me." I was tired of trying to fit into certain style categories.
And I do not want to be a rose.
I do not wish to be pale pink,
but flower scarlet, flower gold.
And have no thorns to distance me,

but be bright,
bright,
bright as yellow,
warm as yellow.

Wear what makes you happy. Two tips I've found very important as I've gotten older and came into my own personal styles are these. 1) Make sure everything fits. It could be the trendiest top in the world but if it's too big or too small it's going to look bad. Even a plain t-shirt with jeans will look better as long as it fits your body correctly. 2) Buy basic staples. Building a great wardrobe takes time and money! Start with classic pieces like great jeans, shoes or a versatile top.

I'm not 100% in love with my closet but I know I look good in everything in there so I think that's more important than wearing whatever is in magazines these days.

I know that I am slightly late replying ! But I have only just joined, so forgive me ?! aha.

I understand where you are coming from, I used to feel like I had a good-ish sense of style ! But, somehow I have got lost in jeans-and-a-top-land, but i feel dull and like a small child. I am turning 20 this year, and its sorta sad because my mother, who has lost a load of weight and looks really good, buys the same clothes as me, AND LOOKS MUCH BETTER ! aha. This sends me into and even deeper despair because then i don't wear the nice dresses etc, and back to the jeans I go !

I think the main issue I have is that I wonder how they all look so good in the magazines, well its photoshop, personal trainers and hours of their days spent focussing just on how to look good. I, as a student nurse, have neither the time nor money for such things !

I think its more about your thought process, you have to think good to feel good :) Find something you think is nice, not what you think looks nice on HER ! because no body is the same, and clothes look different on, literally, everyone. And if it makes you feel happy and confident wear it. The chances are you don't look 16 ! Or rubbish. Or ugly. Because when you feel abit more confident that's normally the first thing people notice.

Even if you start small, with like a new coat thats a bit brighter, or a pair of wooley tights. If it makes you feel good then do it :)

its easier said than done, I know. But, hopefully you feel abit better about it all soon :)
