Music for kids?

Postby candielu » Mon Aug 06, 2012 11:24 am

With the exception of Kids Bop, my daughter hates music that is "made" for kids. Those silly nursery rhyme style CDs - no way. She's not having it.

Kids Bop is good because it takes music that's more her style, but takes out the language that isn't suitable.

But then she asks for more music by those artists and that's where it gets a little iffy. Her dad got her into Katy Perry, which sounds harmless enough except has anyone actually listened to a lot of her lyrics? Have I also mentioned my daughter is 4? Yea...not appropriate.

My 4-year old has a very wide range of music tastes. She'll ask for Frank Sinatra, the soundtrack to Wicked, Kate Perry, Ke$ha, Big Time Rush, One Direction, Taylor Swift, .fun, LMFAO, and I always have WMMR (rock station) on the radio in my car.

So what artists/songs do you think are good for kids that you also enjoy?

Karen O is nice, like the Where The wild things are soundtrack (I enjoy that myself). Maybe a few Feist tracks. Something calming with a nice sunday morning melody. Or just go old school with her, you can never fail with old school. When I was little my mom played alot of motown and you know stuff she grew up with and I love it. Just remember good music never dies.

Can't go wrong with Disney Songs. I loved listening to Disney when I was a little girl. Also, I enjoyed anything from Animaniacs and School House Rocks. :) I do believe Lisa Loeb and They Might Be Giants make children music.

oh thanks for the suggestions! Will tell my husband to add some of those to her mp3 list.
We just got back from a cruise, and every night she HAD to stop in the lobby to listen to the singers. It was an accoustic guitarist/male vocalist and a female vocalist who sang a nice mix of old and new songs.

On a boat ride the radio played "I wanna know what love is" (is that even the title? I don't feel like looking it up) and everyone on the boat started singing it together. She sang it to herself for the whole rest of the day. Plus we love all the fellas in the rat pack, so she gets that music often.

Don't get me started on Disney music! I love disney, but she literally makes me sing Part of your World from the Little Mermaid about once a day...

If your daughter wants a cute little Halloween song to dance to that is bouncy and fun. I suggest: http://youtu.be/Dv2sydFTc9A

The only thing that that isn't kid appropriate is that it says the word beer once in it, but the rest is fun and upbeat.
