Best of 2011

Postby brightasyellow » Sat Dec 31, 2011 1:58 pm

I wrote my year-end list of the books I read. I read all different kinds of books from classics to newly published. Here's the list: http://bit.ly/rLK6NM

My two favorite books that I read this year were Hamlet by Shakespeare and The Season: A Candid Look at Broadway by William Goldman.

What books did you read and what were your faves?
And I do not want to be a rose.
I do not wish to be pale pink,
but flower scarlet, flower gold.
And have no thorns to distance me,

but be bright,
bright,
bright as yellow,
warm as yellow.

Bright--Wow! You've read a lot this year! I'm impressed.

Xolacie--I bought Just Kids, but I haven't read it yet. I'm looking forward to it.

xyz--How did you like The Handmaid's Tale? One of my favorite quotes comes from that book, but I feel sort of "meh" about the book overall.

The best thing I read this year was Sophie's Choice. I loved it.

Wanderlust by Elisabeth Eaves was my favorite book from this year. I read it over the summer at the beach and never wanted it to end! Totally makes you get the travel bug :)

Squirrel Seeks Chipmunk (technically published in 2010, but really later in the year)
Short Girls
We The Animals
Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?
---<--<---*

If that flower was real, I'd pick it for you.

xyz - I love The Handmaid's Tale. I love most everything I've read by Margaret Atwood, including Alias Grace and Cat's Eye.

Huck - I used to read a ton of books a year and then, when social networking became more popular, my reading nosedived. I'm trying to focus more on reading than being on the computer this year.

I read both Mindy Kaling's and Tina Fey's books at the end of 2011. I surprised myself by liking Tina's book more than Mindy's. I like that there was a definite feminist through-line in Tina's memoirs. She's also older than Mindy so I imagine that she had to deal with more of the "women can't be funny" bias.
And I do not want to be a rose.
I do not wish to be pale pink,
but flower scarlet, flower gold.
And have no thorns to distance me,

but be bright,
bright,
bright as yellow,
warm as yellow.

I really loved Handmaid's Tale. It was my first Margaret Atwood book and I'm really excited to tackle just about everything she's every written based on how much I loved Handmaid's Tale. I have Blind Assassin waiting on my shelf for me when I get a chance to dedicate some time to it.

Ugh you and me both! I used to read so much during my commute and at home but now I spend the entire time on my phone looking at facebook and twitter. It's terrible! I really need to get back into the habit of reading more often. I do find that writing down everything that I'm reading helps me stay on track. If I see that I started a book a month ago I get the urge to finish it.

Also my favorite book that I read in 2011 is Room by Emma Donoghue. It was a slow start but I so loved it by the time I was done.
