Some suggestions for possible books:
-Anything by Virginia Woolf...maybe The Waves or To the Lighthouse, I haven't finished either but have been really into her lately.
-The Picture of Dorian Gray
-Anna Karenina...kind of long, but I've been intrigued after seeing the theatrical trailer

On the contemporary side - something like Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro or Black Swan Green by David Mitchell, or something by John Fowles.

I would love to join a book club. I tend to find I read a good book then fail to find another that is equally gripping. My only concern is the cost of getting the books as unfortunately I live in the middle of nowhere and therefore libraries are quite hard to come by

That sounds fun, yes! But I only want to join if our interests match. I mean, you can't have a bookclub with people who want YA and people who want classics, if you know what I mean...
