Florence + The Machine's online book club is, like, the best thing ever

As if Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine wasn’t cool enough: not only does she visit teens in hospices, but she works with teens to run one of the largest online book clubs we’ve heard of! That’s right, Florence isn’t just an amazing singer and philanthropist, she’s a reader.

The story begins back in 2012, when 14-year-old Leah Moloney saw this tweet and photo from Florence:

Realizing Florence was a fellow bonafide bibliophile, Moloney tweeted back:

As Moloney told The Guardian:

“I always looked up to her and knew she was very literary … I thought it would be cool if she had a proper book club…I wasn’t entirely serious, and knew it was a far-fetched idea. She was very elusive and not even that active on social media.”

Well, much to Moloney’s surprise, Florence replied.

Within a week, the star was promoting the club at a show in Indianapolis, flaunting the book on stage in the city where, coincidentally, the first club choice – Opposed Positions by Gwendoline Riley – was set. At the show, Florence announced the book club’s name – Flow’s Book Club, or Between Two Books. “I don’t understand the internet, so I could get that a bit confused,” Florence joked.

Years have passed, and Between Two Books is stronger than ever with over 40,000 Instagram followers. Together, the book club has read over eighteen books, which range in tastes from the satiric A Confederacy of Dunces to Patti Smith’s memoir Just Kids. All genres are on the table, even poetry!

And other celebrities have joined Florence and Moloney’s book club party, including Lena Dunham:

Even Brie Larson signed up

“It’s all very fluid and organic collaboration,” Moloney told The Guardian, and it sure feels that way. Despite the book club’s massive size, Between Two Books lacks any sort of specific structure and remains fan-run, making it easier to adapt to their star’s erratic schedule. Everyone posts when they are available, and Welch’s involvement ranges from posting pictures of what she’s reading to hosting charity fundraisers or even interviewing writer Donna Tartt:

Florence takes her book club seriously, spreading her joy of books by challenging her fans to read as much as they can:

Hello everyone!! As we approach the beginning of July, things are feeling quite exciting.. summer plans are being made and the collection of books on your bed side table will be piling up. You all know what this means! It is time for the Between Two Books annual SUMMER READING CHALLENGE! The main goal here is to simply enjoy your summer (or winter, depending on your location in the world 🌎), relax, read as many books as you can, and most importantly; have fun!! So... throughout the months of July and August, we simply encourage all of you to READ READ READ!!! Read a book, read a magazine, the newspaper, essays or a thesaurus!! Just keep those eye balls moving!! If you want, you can set yourself a specific book goal.. for example, to read a particular number of books before the end of August, to read a novel in a language you are learning, to discover a genre you would consider to be out of your comfort zone.. or perhaps to write. If so, note it down. That way, you can focus on attaining this goal. It is only a guideline for you. Remember, all you need to do to take part in the BTB Challenge is to make a pledge to read as much as you can. In addition, we want to add something new to the Between Two Books Challenge this year. We want to challenge you to take a break from social media. We LOVE our social media, and it can be used for so much good (like online book clubs 😏) but it can also be very addictive! We ourselves would like to break this habit. We therefore want to invite our bookclubbers to join us in pledging to keep 2 hours per day (or whatever suits you!) completely social media free this July and August. Let us know what you use this time for instead of scrolling scrolling clicking clicking falling down that hole… We would love to be kept up to date and to see all the wonderful things you lovely people are reading, so please feel free to post pictures and use the hashtag #BTBChallenge16!! We will also be reposting your photos so make sure to tag us!! We really encourage you all to take part, as it will be great fun and good for your heart, mind and soul 💙📖🌙💐🌛✨🌟📚 GET READING!!! GOOOOOOO!!! Lots of love, Between Two Books Xx

Or hosting some fun writing projects:

Hello everyone! We just wanted to let you all know that there are exactly, 6 hours remaining to submit your creative stories/ writing and poems for our current project! (Midnight EST) Thank you so much to all of you who have been sending us so many amazing pieces of writing. You are all so incredible and we appreciate the hard work, love and effort put into each piece of writing 🌺 We are so incredibly overwhelmed with all of your lovely writing pieces, works of art and kind words. We hope you are all excited as much as we are! Also, we have received many many entries and are trying to read and reply to everyone. It is taking quite some time but please know, all of your pieces of work are safe and you will all be receiving replies shortly! Thank you so much 💖 For those of you who have still not sent in an entry, please look at our previous posts for details! Here is a reminder of what we are working on! We are creating one big book, full of your creative writing and poetry, inspired by every F+tM song, and albums! It will be a literary copy of all songs and albums, but changed into literary form! We would love entries for every song, including bonus tracks and songs that didn't make it onto an album as well! For more detailed info please look at previous posts! Submissions must be sent to flowsbookclub@hotmail.com This project is more about transforming one piece of writing into another, original one.. as opposed to describing the potential intended meaning of the songs. Of course, if this is what you really want to do, we will include it! But as much as possible we would love entries to maintain the style of creative writing 🌛 Again, thank you so much to everyone who has been part of this, it is so very special and we hope it has inspired many of you to continue to write and become more creative! Much Love, Leah and Heather xx🌺🌻💖💛
