Emma Watson is always on the cutting edge of fashion at red carpet events and awards ceremonies, but she also uses her clothing to make a social statement sometimes. That’s exactly what Watson did while at the 2017 MTV Movie & TV Awards, when she wore a subtle pin with a big message. While the actress has showcased her eco-friendly fashion sense throughout the years, the star of Beauty and the Beast made a statement about inclusivity with her tiny accessory during the March 7th awards ceremony.
Rather than go with a princess look at the MTV Movie & TV Awards, Watson went edgy with a black asymmetrical dress by KITX. And on her waist, she had a blue ampersand pin. This & symbol accessory is from the LGBTQ acceptance organization GLAAD.
It’s explained on the organization’s website as:
“Proudly display the ampersand to declare that you stand with all communities subject to discrimination – including women, Muslims, immigrants, and LGBTQ people.”
Beyond just wearing a symbol of support, Watson got to speak out about acceptance as well. After host Adam Devine’s Beauty and the Beast-themed opening, Watson accepted the Best Actor in a Movie award — the first time an acting award wasn’t separated by gender. It was presented by Asia Kate Dillon, an actor who identifies as gender non-binary, something that Watson also acknowledged by thanking Dillon for “educating me in such an inclusive, patient, and loving way.”
Another winner at the MTV Movie & TV Awards — Millie Bobby Brown, who won for her role as Eleven on Stranger Things — also wore the GLAAD pin, making this movement an official trend.
With two such inspirational actors wearing the & symbol, we hope that GLAAD’s message of acceptance, tolerance, and unity will spread even more. And if you want your own & gear, you can purchase items off of GLAAD’s website to show you stand in solidarity with groups that are marginalized.
