EINTKILF Everything I Need to Know, I Learned From Lucy van Pelt Jessica Tholmer

I need a pick-me-up, and whenever I need a pick-me-up, I Google Charlie Brown stuff. Say no more. Lucy Van Pelt is my patronus.

EINTKILF Lucy van Pelt

1. Never fall in love with a musician.
Poor Lucy. I admire her game so much. I wish I lacked the social consciousness to bother the boy I loved while he tried to play the piano. For years. Even though I am pretty sure it never worked out between Lucy and Schroeder, I still admire her persistence.
musicianAnd I fully relate to her sentiment. Though I told my friend that I believe drummers are the exception because they are pretty much never rude or conceited. SINGERS, THOUGH. LET ME TELL YA. Steer clear of those musicians. The ones that “play their vocal chords” are to be avoided at all costs.

2. But also, go after your man.
Like aforementioned, I think there is something to be said about Lucy’s persistence. I don’t know…personally, I am always torn between A) fighting for my man (aka being pushy and forcing him to face his feelings for me) or B) playing hard-to-get. I don’t do B very well, but I am constantly attempting to take men at their word instead of being like…”you don’t really mean that, I know you love me.” This is my internal struggle, everydamntime. I guess what I am saying is that I am pretty much Lucy.
lucyI just have a fighting soul, guys. Though really, I believe men should be fighting for my love, not vice versa. I’m the damn catch here.

3. The names of fears.

Lucy: Are you afraid of staircases? If you are, then you have climacaphobia. Maybe you have thalassophobia. This is fear of the ocean, or gephyrobia, which is the fear of crossing bridges. Or maybe you have pantophobia. Do you think you have pantophobia?
Charlie Brown: What’s pantophobia?
Lucy: The fear of everything.
Charlie Brown: THAT’S IT!

Oh, Lucy. She’s such a know-it-all. On another note, I think I have pantophobia.

4. How to dress for Halloween.

Lucy: A person should always choose a costume which is in direct contrast to her own personality.

Lucy was dressed as a witch. I guess I should be a…white man for Halloween? That’s the scariest thing I can think of anyway.

5. Love your brother.
I love Lucy and Linus’ relationship. Lucy is always picking on Linus to get rid of his safety blanket. She thinks he is an idiot for believing in the Great Pumpkin. She hates when he pats Woodstock on the head. She is overly bossy toward him, and she always ruins his little creative projects. Lucy is the worst.

But then you get those sweet moments, and it’s like…aww siblings. Like when Linus tells Lucy that she should count her lucky blessings, and she barks back about what blessings he expects her to be thankful for. Linus, in his adorable sincerity, simply says, “Well, for one thing, you have a little brother who loves you.”

Lucy bursts into tears and hugs her little brother. Presh.

6. “It’s amazing how stupid you can be when you’re in love.”

I mean, I can’t really say it better than this picture. Story. Of. My. Life.

7. It is okay to be kind of a bully…
obviously think that a bit of pushiness is okay from time to time. It’s funny because I kind of dumb down my sassiness when I really like a man, but time and time again, it has turned out to be a bad plan. Coddling people (especially men) gets you nowhere. I say, speak your mind. Express yourself. Maybe be a little nicer to your little brother, but the Charlie Browns in your life will be fine. Tell it like it is, ladies.

I want to go ahead and rely on double standards for a second, ’cause I really think men shouldn’t be bullies. Men need to be a little more sensitive about the feelings of others. SORRY IF THAT’S UNFAIR, DUDES.

8. …but find your balance.
He can handle your verbal abuse and bluntness, but for god’s sake, let poor Charlie Brown kick the ball every once in awhile. You should never completely destroy someone’s self esteem.

9. Stand up for yourself.

Because if you don’t, no one will.

10. Have confidence in your decisions.

Lucy: I never made a mistake in my life. I thought I did once, but I was wrong.

I mean…try not to be completely arrogant, but at the same time, it is nice to think back on your decisions with the ability to back them up. I often say things like, “I know I always think I’m right, but I really think I am this time.” Or lately, “I’m not saying I’m perfect, but I really didn’t do anything wrong here!” Pretty much the same sentiment.

But seriously, you guys. In every annoying situation in my life over the past few months (read: with men), it seriously was not my fault.

Thanks, Lucy. And thank you, dear Charles Schulz.
