If I could offer only one piece of fashion advice for the winter season, it would be that everybody should invest in a stylish as well as practical winter coat. Learning how to master the art of layering is also an excellent idea, but for now I’ve decided to put coats in the spotlight. Although finding the right coat may not be of much concern to people who live in regions unaccustomed to colder weather (don’t mind me, I’ll just be sitting here in silent, shivering jealousy), I hope my picks can be helpful to those familiar with bundling up. In my past experiences with dressing for less than ideal weather conditions, I’ve learned that opting to wear the hot chocolate stained puffy coat that’s been in the back of my closet for 5+ years was not always the wisest decision, especially when trying to remain semi-stylish. But as country superstar Taylor Swift demonstrates, a good coat can make a big difference, especially when it can be an effective way to brave the cold without jeopardizing your style.
While on a visit to London, Swift was seen sporting this super cute maroon duffle coat from Topshop, but if you don’t want to spend $178 on outerwear (the item is sold out anyway), dELiA*s offers a similar coat in pomegranate for about $60. If you’re more interested in a slightly darker shade, Forever 21 sells a double-breasted creation that’s fully lined and under $30.
What Swift is wearing for a top is unclear, but if you loved her yellow pleated skirt and sweater combo from last November as much as I did, then I would suggest taking a cue from her fall wardrobe and wearing a cable knit piece like this one from Old Navy. Shed the coat, and you’ve still got a chunky sweater to keep you warm. As for jeans, you can wear any pair you already own with a coat like the one above. However, if you are looking for new and inexpensive denim, H&M’s &DENIM brand is a favorite of mine, offering a pair of jeans for just under $20.
Unfortunately, Swift’s herringbone boots from Anthropologie are mostly sold out (and a tad too expensive for me), but Endless sells faux leather riding boots for under $50 that feature a two-toned design similar to the singer’s pair. The best herringbone style I found was a pair of Chooka rain boots on Endless and Piperlime among other sites, but I must warn you that the pickings are slim. To round out the ensemble, a purse that resembles Swift’s versatile saddle bag can be found over on ModCloth’s website, but a less expensive alternative is sold at Target, too.
Whether you’re heading to class or running errands, Swift’s look is not only chic but also warm and comfortable for the winter months, not to mention the longer coat is a perfect partner for both pants and dresses. But the absence of a scarf or hat leaves me wondering, are there any accessories you would add to the outfit? Or would you perhaps trade in the toggles for a different coat entirely? Feel free to share your ideas!
