This past weekend, Sunny’s classmate had a birthday party. As we all know little kids LOVE birthday parties, but this one in particular sounded like a little girl’s dream. The invitation was for an all-girls faux slumber party. Everyone got matching nightgowns upon their arrival and they all cuddled in bed, watched movies and did each other’s hair. I mean, even I was seriously jealous.
This party was different than any other party Sunny had ever been to, as the invite specifically stated that parents were to drop off their children and pick them up later that evening. The birthday girl’s parents and grandparents were going to be there to watch the girls.
I told Sunny that we’d be dropping her off and that she had to be on her best behavior or she would no longer be allowed to go to her friend’s house. Okay, so what we had here was Sunny, no parents, a few girlfriends, PJs and birthday cake. I got the feeling that Sunny kept thinking she had gotten super lucky that we weren’t going to be there that she thought she was getting something past me and she thought I was not fully comprehending the situation. She kept asking, “You guys are just dropping me off? Where are you going to go? Will there be grown ups there?”
We dropped off Sunny and all the girls seemed super excited to be there. It was really a sweet scene. The parents and grandparents seemed so nice and we gave Sunny a big kiss and off we went. When I came back to pick her up, I was in a huge rush as I parked illegally (there was no parking anywhere on their street). I thanked the parents for having Sunny over and was frantically running around their house trying to get Sunny’s things together so I wouldn’t get a ticket.
While I was gathering Sunny’s things all over the house, I noticed the dad leaned down to Sunny’s level and they were “clowning around”. He was teasing her and all I heard was, “I bet you can’t catch me!” The next thing I know, Sunny sucker punched this stranger (very nice man) in the face. She has NEVER hit anyone in her life and now she hit the birthday girl’s dad!
Oh my God, I was so mortified and embarrassed, I kept apologizing and Sunny just started crying hysterically because she herself was in total shock over what she had just done. My husband was proud of Sunny for putting that dad “in his place”, but honestly, he’s a bit crazy. I should have seen it coming; somehow the combination of no parents, a bunch of kids, cake and a slumber party put her on sensory overload and she thought it was okay to just punch some bald dad in the face. I would have been much more upset had I not laughed the whole way home. Obviously, I told Sunny I was laughing at a joke I heard earlier that day.
