Do You Believe in Psychics?
by Hesley Harps
Guys. Do you believe in psychics? I’ve always been on the fence about the topic, but now my mind has been blown by two separate psychic activities in the past few weeks and I can’t stand by and silently wonder anymore.
The first event happened when I went to the Goodwill on October 29th to put together a Halloween costume. Yes, I did just write “the Goodwill” because I am from Georgia and for some reason we add “the” before lots of things that don’t really need it. I went in with the intention of dressing up as Niles Crane from Frasier, but I left as a Monkey in a Barrel, if you must know (and you must).
Okay, back to psychics. While in the store, a rather cheerful man complimented the barrel costume I had just found and told me that he was dressing up as Buddha. He was pretty Buddha-esque, so I have to say that his costume was probably a home run. I thought nothing of this interaction…until later when I ran into him again in the parking lot. It turned out that he was a little more eccentric that I had originally anticipated.
To summarize the encounter, he pretty much performed a lengthy vaudeville act, discussed the state of the “commercial world” with me and showed me the signature move he makes every time he tells a joke. Honestly, I love talking to random people, so this interaction was right up my alley. But then, all of the sudden, my vaudevillian friend paused for a moment and proceeded to give me the most unnervingly accurate psychic reading OF ALL TIME. (Note: I had never had a psychic reading before, but this was really real.)
Whatever the case, what he had to say was so accurate that I cannot even write the details in this post. Basically, he was talking about my personality and specific relationship issues I have with friends and family. Nothing as specific as “your mother’s middle name is Gladys and in high school your nickname was Squeaks,” but still, CHILLING.
I couldn’t get it off my mind, so I figured that the only way to determine if it was possible for any of this to be true was to see another person with psychic abilities. Cut to me getting my fortune told with Russian Gypsy Fortune Telling Cards, which are similar to tarot cards. If you know me, you know that I am both very excitable and impressionable, so needless to say, I went into the situation with a lot of nervous energy. It was late on Tuesday night when I had my cards read by Crystal, who is a friend of a friend. Almost instantly, I began to have regrets. What if the cards warned of something terrible? What if they said I’d end up shoveling poo for the rest of my life? (That’s what my dad said I’d end up doing if I didn’t go to college.) What if it was so accurate that I CRIED and/or FREAKED OUT?
As it turns out, they DID warn of something. For real. The first card warned of immediate physical danger. Say what?! Now, the cards mean different things depending on which position they are in, etc, but just so you know, I got a few more “danger” cards, signifying immediate emotional upheaval, an unpleasant encounter, and a warning that my talkativeness would get me into trouble. I mean, I don’t need a deck of cards to tell me that I run my mouth too much, I already know that, but hey, everyone has challenges! On the flip side, I got some really positive cards, signifying luck, stability, romance, and strong friendships. It seemed that the reading overall was encouraging me to slow down, be more patient, and relax in the heat of this battle called life because, if I don’t, I’ll destroy my own prospects for the future. Seems like generally good advice, and it is, but I gotta say, in addition to the overall feel, some unnerving specifics came up, so that’s pretty bananas!
In the end, did I find the reading accurate? Absolutely. It served as a real refection of things I was feeling and thinking, so who’s to say that when people spend a certain amount of time or energy thinking about an issue, that it won’t manifest itself in some way? Which makes me wonder about the ominous warning from the cards…should I be saving up to rent a protective bubble? Or can I just be more aware of my surroundings and actions in order to prevent certain disaster? In this way, will I redirect my thoughts and, thusly, my very destiny?!
Yikes, this is all sounding pretty serious! So, I want to know what you think! Have any of you ever had an experience with someone who is truly psychic or clairvoyant? Do you believe that tarot cards hold enough power to deliver a compelling glimpse of the future? No matter how you slice it, it’s always good to reflect on your life, looking out for pitfalls and spending time appreciating loved ones, so I don’t think any of this can hurt me, but I was so surprised by the accuracy of the reading that I want to know everyone else’s thoughts!

my mum is clairvoyant. but any good medium knows you dont tell ppl about deaths or stuff like that because believing something will happen can bring it into being. as with all things there are truths and also fakes. just keep your wits about you and dont pay someone with a crystal ball all your life savings or something.
I totally believe that psychics exist. Though I haven’t had a personal experience with one, I’ve seen enough and heard enough to convince me that there are people who can see beyond the average person. Your account is just one more story that supports my thoughts on the matter.
I believe there are psychics and clairvoyants, and that a lot of “normal” people even have some innate ability to read people really well so they can feel what others are feeling (strong empathy can feel like psychic ability). But it seems unlikely to me that all, or even probably most, of the people who make a living as a psychic actually have true clairvoyance.
I read Tarot cards (as a hobby), and I’ve often found that the energy you bring (or try to cover up) during a spread often affects the spread. It could be that your danger cards are just a representation of the nervousness you felt going into the session. Like you said, it could be a warning just to slow down, not worry so much about your future.
On the other hand, though I believe there is a great force behind Tarot, I also tend to use it as what I like to call “guided therapy.” Often the cards present scenarios, not exact future events. And when a certain card falls into a certain position, it is more of an idea to regard. In the sense that you can look at your situation or problems or traits from another perspective and lead your mind to finding alternative solutions just by talking it out with the spread reader (or “psychic”).
While guided therapy is great for helping one figure out his or her own problems, I’ve also had very eerily accurate spreads that have lead to a shiver up my spine and swearing never to read Tarot again (at least for a week or so).
It’s great because, whether you believe it or not, it’s a great opportunity to think about or address certain situations or relationships! Makes you wonder, though, how the cards “know” what areas need the most attention…

Long island medium made me believe in psychics. Legitimately. However I definitely believe that everyone has a certain amount of intuition, it’s just whether you’re tapped into it or not
I’m an intuitive and occasional medium so I think that pretty much covers the question of whether or not I believe in it. I tend to not discuss it with strangers because of the bible belt backlash. Those I do tell either believe me or not. It’s not my place to change anyone’s mind or prove myself. I know what I know. I’ve experienced what I’ve experienced. Those that truly know me (and several of my reiki clients…I often receive information and communication during a reiki session, although I don’t make that the purpose of the work) have experienced it firsthand and I’m fine with leaving it at that.
As far as tarot or any other tool…they are just that…tools. A hammer doesn’t know how to build a cabinet. It’s all about the skill of the person using the tool.
All that being said, being sensitive makes life pretty entertaining at times…and pretty frustrating at others…but all in all I like it. It has alerted me to emergencies, assisted with friends’ health and helped loved ones with some serious situations. I wouldn’t trade it for the world…even if some people think I’m in cahoots with the devil. ♥
That’s awesome, what an amazing gift!
A homeless man read my sisters palm and told her she would have a psychotic episode when she turns 19. Little did he know she was 21 and had already had it.
Also the ouija board told me i would date E.F. and i didn’t move it to say that because at the time the only E.F. i knew of was on my facebook block list….but two months later i re-added her on facebook… fastforward a bit and now we are engaged.
Whoa, spooky stuff!
