Giggles and Glue GunsDIY Sock BunMr. Kate

Sock buns are my new obsession! Ever wonder how people get those meaty, chubby buns (in their hair, people!)? I suspect they put a sock in it! I am fully aware that I did not invent this age-old trick to give yourself an easy and fatty bun, but I decided to do a DIY video for one anyways because I think it’s such a fun trick!

It also gives you amazing waves in your hair if you put a sock in it while damp and go to sleep. You will awake to rolling waves…in your hair.

Watch the video above for visual instructions.

What You Need:

  • A sock
  • A hair elastic
  • Scissors

DO IT!:

  1. Cut the toe off of the sock to create a tube.
  2. Roll your tube into a ‘bagel’ shape.
  3. Make a ponytail in your hair where you want the bun.
  4. Pull your ponytail through the center of the sock bagel and spread your hair around the sock.
  5. Roll the sock down the length of your ponytail (towards your head) and wrap your hair around it as you go. Make your you’re covering the sock as you go.
  6. When you’ve reached the base of your ponytail, tuck in any remaining ends and make sure the sock is covered with hair.

Ta da! That is one meaty bun you’ve got there!

  1. I wanna try that tmrw!! Thats just awesome!

  2. I tried it immediately after watching the DIY video…but I can’t make it work :( my hair is long enough but layered which makes getting all the hair in super challenging! It is soooo cute though, wish I could do it!

  3. When I was in dance I used to put my hair like this everyday. Had like five pairs of socks just for my hair lol.

  4. If you slightly dampen your pony tail before you put it in the bun, when you take it out, you will have soft, loose beachy curls!

  5. I never thought to use a plain old sock to do this. what a great idea. I saw you on Pinterest, I love that site.
visit my site http://bradbykkonen.com/ and let me know what you think. I’d love your input.

  8. this is reet good! i might put my hair in a bun for my night out tonight

  9. This just reminds me of the horrors of everyday life as a woman in the military…sock buns. lol

  10. This worked perfectly – always wanted to learn how to do this. Now to explain to my boyfriend why one of his socks has mysteriously disappeared…..

  11. I tried to do the sock bun this morning but my hair is so fine and stupid that it looked awful :(

  12. i tried doing this a few months ago and couldn’t get it to work :( i read a few variations in technique, one was to flip the hair over, tie an elastic around and just pin loose ends but my hair is so long and thick that just made the bun stick out like a second head, and when i tried to roll the sock down like you say it just seemed to get all tangled and confusing. maybe i just have too much hair?

  13. I wonder, could I use an actual bagel? Because I only ate half of one this morning. Maybe I could use some bacon as earrings, too? How long do you think it would take for my cats to eat my head?

  14. This is great! my hair doesnt quite reach my shoulders, so i used an ankle sock instead..takes a few more bobby pins, but its much nicer than the classic ‘boring’ bun :)

  15. Going to try this tomorrow!
Does hair have to be a certain length to work?

  16. I can’t wait for my hair to be long enough to do this. Do you find that the elastic leaves a weird line in your hair after you take it down? Is there a way to do it without the elastic?

  17. I am trying this asap. :o)

  18. I had no idea socks were used to make this bun! Need to try this ! :)

  19. I love the way this look- a biiigggg bun and beautiful curls later. I have been trying to get my hair to wrap around and have encountered some difficulty..alas, must keep trying. Thanks for posting this!
