Crafternoon

Crafternoon with Zooey D

Are you an unmedicated adult with Attention Deficit Disorder who also LOVES to do crafts? I AM! I barely have the patience to write this opening paragraph (I have already gotten up four times), so I need to focus my unfocused mind on projects that can be completed very quickly. Am I going to knit a scarf? NO! Will I knit a scarf for a bunny? I don’t know. Maybe, if it’s a really small field bunny and I am knitting with giant knitting needles. I recognize I will never complete something that takes any kind of patience (sorry needlepoint) so I decided to focus this blog on crafts I CAN complete.

Today’s crafty craft: A (very simple) drawstring bag

What you will need:

1. A square of fabric. Mine is about a foot and a half each side but I am too lazy to measure it. Plus, it doesn’t REALLY matter. Hopefully the fabric has a cool print because this is a really simple bag.

2. A sewing maching. I have a HELLO KITTY Janome sewing machine. It’s awesome.

zooeybag2 Crafternoon with Zooey D

3. Thread for the sewing machine. I mean, clearly.

4. Ribbon. This will act as the drawstring.

5. A safety pin. Everyone has one somewhere. I am guessing if you have a sewing machine, you have a safety pin.

Steps

1. Hem two parallel sides of the square. In case you don’t know what hemming is: fold a quarter of an inch of fabric over on to the non-printed side, then fold again. Sew it down.

SO INSIDE OUT, IT WILL LOOK LIKE THIS (notice the hemmed edges, friends)

2. Sew the third edge down (fold under if you’re fancy, I am) leaving a tunnel big enough to fit your ribbon, for me about an inch and a half.

3. Fold the material in half between the two hemmed parallel edges, INSIDE OUT, and sew together the raw edges and the hemmed edges. Stop when you get to the aforementioned ribbon pathway.

4. Turn the bag right side in.

5. Attach a safety pin to the ribbon.

6. Feed the ribbon into the ribbon tunnel.

7. Remove safety pin.

VOILA!

Total project time: 15 minutes
Functionality: It will hold approximately 1 child’s shoe, a manicure kit, or a rolled up t-shirt and possibly a pair of tennis socks.

Okay. That’s quite enough.

Hi Zooey! Great tip with the safety pin, i’ve always wanted to know how to do that

  2. Thumb upThumb down5

Perfect! I’ve been looking for something to hold exactly one child’s shoe! Haha but for real, cool bag… I might have to try this. :)

  3. Thumb upThumb down5

Too bad my attention span and sewing skills are so lacking that I don’t think I could even finish this project.

  4. Thumb upThumb down

Oh Ruby has this sewing machine, we’re gonna try this!

  5. Thumb upThumb down

Thats a great idea! I’ll be trying that this weekend!

A woman can never be “too good” at sewing.

  7. Thumb upThumb down

Can’t wait to try this out. Will be my first sewing project and I’m super excited to pick out a funky fabric.

  8. Thumb upThumb down

Great tutorial Zooey! I absolutely love the fabric you used, that pattern is gorgeous. I’ve got some adorable remnants I picked up years ago that would make great little bags like this. Thanks for the idea!

  9. Thumb upThumb down

OMG, I LOVE your Hello Kitty sewing Machine. It looks wicked cool! I want one! The one I have, doesn’t even work. I wanted to make a dog collar (martingale) and snuggle sack (which is more or less like this pouch, just, bigger, obviously. Unless your dog is the size of a hamster, than it may work. ;) ) but the sewing machine didn’t even start up. I bet Hello Kitty has a much better success rate! . Nice narration of the pouch. It reminds me of my marbles bag back in the days. As for getting the ribbon in, yup, safety pin tip is how my mom taught it to me too. It works amazing to get any kind of ribbon or elastics into clothing.

  10. Thumb upThumb down

HELLO KITTY SEWING MACHINE! OMG! i don’t know how to use a sewing machine so all of my sewing projects are done by hand, and thus, NEVER completed because i too, have a very short attention span.

  11. Thumb upThumb down1

Thanks, Zooey! I’m on the same concentration level as you, I hope you’ll keep these projects coming :D

  12. Thumb upThumb down

This is so adorable!! I’m heading out to LA in two day and I think I might have to whip a couple of these up before my trip. So crafty, Zooey!

  13. Thumb upThumb down3

i might make a tiny one for my cell phone. thx!

  14. Thumb upThumb down

If you don’t have the skills or patience with a sewing machine you can always try a glue gun! You are preciously funny!

The safety pin tip is genius. I love this tutorial. Not only is it easy to follow, but funny as well. Thanks Zooey! <3

Note to Auntie Zooey: Make a quilt for sister’s baby Bones. A good quilt to make for a baby is a “Rag Quilt” They usually made of flannel and a thin, all cotton batting. Find instructions online. These quilts are durable, comfortable, and easy easy easy to make…or send me an email and I will make it for you. Happy Days, Gail

  17. Thumb upThumb down

    What an adorable sewing machine.

  18. Thumb upThumb down

OMG. You are awesome and that sewing machine is the. best.

  19. Thumb upThumb down

I love that this is for people with short attention spans! I need crafts like that, haha. Unfortunately, my sewing skills are lacking (we had to sew something small in middle school and I think that was the last time I attempted it!) but possibly with a sewing machine I’d be better! I’ll have to look for one when I have free time. :)

“Are you an unmedicated adult with Attention Deficit Disorder who also LOVES to do crafts? I AM! ” So am I! what a coincidence haha, because of it I have become an Avid Hobby-collector, which in turn led to me starting up “Trunk of Monkeys Creations” A custom sock monkey business. http://www.facebook.com/#!/group.php?gid=347288101556 But (of course)vit is no longer just monkeys made out of socks… giraffes, sheep, snails, elephants… you name it… haha.

Thanks Zooey for inspiring me to start sewing again! I haven’t made a bag in about 3 or 4 years. <33.

  32. Thumb upThumb down

Oh man, I wish I had a Hello Kitty sewing machine. Or just a sewing machine that sewed a proper straight line – my mother’s one (which she kindly shares) is ancient and totally breaks into random zig-zag.

<3 I want to be like you when I grow up.

    • Thumb upThumb down

  48. Thumb upThumb down

I need to invest in a sewing machine.

  49. Thumb upThumb down

I just made a fancy-looking one to match my prom dress. It is gonna hold my “in-too-much-pain-to-dance-any-longer-in-these-heels” sandals :) only took me 10 minutes (plus the time it took to do the embroidery)

  50. Thumb upThumb down

    You are way too awesome!

  51. Thumb upThumb down

Very cool, takes me back to high school home economics!

  52. Thumb upThumb down

oh my! this is actually a project I CAN FINISH! My “craft closet” (named this only because this is the place I have dumped – I mean stored – my unfinished craft projects – I get bored fairly quickly. Your pattern seems like an easy one to enlarge (for a pair of adult shoes)! Just a suggestion: another quick craft is jewelry making. I am an instant gratification kinda gal (when it comes to crafting) and this can be accomplished with just a few supplies. Happy Crafting!

  53. Thumb upThumb down

LOVE IT. My general rule is to not even start crafts because all my projects end up in unfinished piles in my closet (with a bunch of craft supplies for projects I forgot that I wanted to start) — but this is GREAT! Keep it coming Zooey! :) You are fan-freaking-tastic.

  54. Thumb upThumb down

haha LOVE the sewing machine..I have an old “white” sewing machine that’s completely made out of metal..its crazy heavy :P But I adore the handbag idea and its something I will definitely try :D
