Like This? Try That! Why ‘Chaotic Awesome' is the Talk Show of Our DreamsMelanie Schmitz

Got an hour to spare in your week? No? Make room. It’s time to tune into the best thing to happen to television and media since Firefly’s Mal Reynolds put on a bonnet and swore to end you.

If, like many others, you’ve enjoyed whittling away the early hours watching morning talk shows like GMA or MTV news, but were still left wanting more than the usual pomp and fluff, sit back and strap in because I’m about to tell you why Chaotic Awesome is the dream you’ve all been waiting for.

Over the years, a host of nerd-friendly networks like Geek & Sundry, Nerdist and The Nerd Machine have slowly begun to take over the media world – they’re broadcasting regular podcasts and amassing legions of followers through various entertainment highways, including events like International Tabletop Day, Nerd HQ and the monthly “ye-olde-stage production,” The Thrilling Adventure Hour. So when Nerdist contributors Chloe Dykstra and Michele Morrow, who also contributes to HelloGiggles, saw an opening in the market for a shiny (yeah, I went there) new weekly broadcast, they jumped at the opportunity.

Chaotic Awesome “feature[s] celebrities and rising stars of science, science fiction, fantasy, comics, cosplay, YouTube, social media and video games.” For nerd-culture enthusiasts, the show totally lives up to its name; beginning each Wednesday, the two-hour live stream kicks off with recent “Nerd News.” In-depth conversation follows with a segment called “Character Sheet,” which features chats with guests such as Diablo III game director Josh Mosqueira, JPL systems engineer and “Mohawk Guy” Bobak Ferdwosi, science writer Jennifer Oullette (Me, Myself, and Why: Searching for the Science of Self) and Mythbusters star and Artoo Technician, Grant Imahara.

In addition to the customary talk-show repertoire, Chaotic Awesome also showcases correspondents Christina Ochoa, Marisha Ray and Taliesin Jaffe in hilarious and informative segments such as “Street Pass” (a “Jaywalking”-esque interview segment with random strangers on the street), “Know Brainer,” centered around current science news (a huge draw for science junkies like myself) and my personal favorite, “The Fellowship of the Thing,” wherein correspondents and weekly guests join in a rousing discussion of current topics. Viewers are also privy to a well of fresh movie clips, insider gaming news and hysterical round-table hijinks.

It’s a geek’s dream.

Dykstra and Morrow are committed to giving viewers an all-access pass to exceptional and fresh information and news, “Our vision with the show goes beyond the typical ‘talking head’ format and fills a void in the market, introducing the world to the celebrities of tech, gaming and new media, allowing them to take center stage,” says Dykstra. “Today, almost everyone has a little geek in them.”

BiteSizeTV CEO Ron Bloom agrees. “Nerd culture is the new culture. We want to take it to the world stage. [Chaotic Awesome co-hosts and creators] Michele and Chloe are the ‘real deal’ and it’s great to have them leading the charge.”
