I am currently trying to do this with an ex. Similar to you are each others best friends and are trying to remain friends. However for us we broke up because he went to school in Japan. We tried to do long distance but in the end it was too hard. I was constantly sad and couldn't stand knowing that while he was fulfilling a life long dream, I was dying inside. So he asked that we break up because in the end, neither of us wanted to lose the other to anger or fighting, and we both want the other to he happy and enjoy life.

I do believe it can work, but it does take a lot of effort to get over the fence to friendship from a long loving relationship. We currently aren't friends on Facebook because neither of us could stand to see the pictures of the other living it up in their new life. But we still connect via email and make sure the other is ok. But both of us have admitted that it is hard, but what we have friendship-wise is worth it.
