IMAGINE for a moment: It’s 1966, Philadelphia. 6am. You can’t sleep despite the tryptophan in your system. Loud noises. Cars honking. People shouting. You peek through your blinds; the faintest bit of sunlight stinging your tired eyes. But then… you see it. An OUTBREAK of heavy and disruptive pedestrian and vehicle traffic! A bus has crashed into a taxi. Police are everywhere…. sirens can be heard! People are MOBBING THE STREETS… out of control! ARE THEY ZOMBIES?! WHAT WILL YOU DO?!
Although this sounds like the beginnings of some stylized video game, this is actually how the term “Black Friday” was coined – not a term of endearment or a way of putting retailers’ accounts “in the black”… this was a day that was hated by all city and transportation workers. The Philadelphia Police Department named the day after Thanksgiving “Black Friday” because of its dread: massive amounts of people overcrowded the sidewalks, traffic jams created havoc and humanity in general could not be conditioned to follow proper protocol and decency when stores offered amazing early Christmas shopping opportunities.
As a gamer, I kinda like the term, even though Cyber Monday is way sexier these days. And by sexy, I mean I can roll outta bed, forgo makeup, chill in my pajamas and scour the internet for the best deals and discounts available all from my computer.
If you’re reading this, you’re looking at a computer right now. And you must be wondering, what kind of Black Friday/Cyber Monday Gamer deal does Michele have for ME?!
I have another giveaway. It’s true. THREE different games and SIX winnings, for my dear readers. Any of these games would make awesome gifts, stocking stuffers or a little something for yourself! My reviews for each are below.
MIDWAY ARCADE ORIGINS — Level UP’s Cyber Monday Giveaway: 1 XBOX and 2 PS3 Games will be shipped to three unique HelloGiggles readers!
Midway Arcade Origins — Retro Gamers, excite! FORGET the quarters. Now you can play the greatest arcade games ever, right from the comfort of your own home.
I grew up in arcades, so this was a BLAST. I surprised my boyfriend by ordering pizza, buying some beer and throwing Midway Arcade Origins into the XBOX. And there, at our fingertips was Marble Madness, Joust, Gauntlet, Rampage and Spy Hunter… to name a few. Even if you don’t win our Cyber Monday giveaway, this game is a fantastic deal. You get 30 genre-defining, classic games for $30 ($29.99) from the golden age of arcades.
If you’re too young to have played these games… these are your gaming roots. Learn them, love them, respect them. They’re fun, and sometimes funny, especially in comparison to how far technology has come. Longtime fans will seriously enjoy testing their skills once again. And, most importantly, many games can be played with up to three friends in local and multiplayer co-op. Just like the old days.
Games include: Defender, Gauntlet, Joust, Rampage, and Total Carnage, as well as 720 °, A.P.B., Arch Rivals, Bubbles, Championship Sprint, Tournament Cyberball 2072, Defender II, Gauntlet II, Joust 2, Marble Madness, Pit-Fighter, Rampart, Robotron 2084, Root Beer Tapper, Satan’s Hollow, Sinistar, Smash TV, Spy Hunter, Spy Hunter II, Super Off Road, Super Sprint, Toobin’, Vindicators Part II, Wizard of Wor, Xenophobe, and Xybots.
Pid is awesome. It’s got a great retro feel while bringing some stylish and creative platforming adventure to the table. The premise is that you play as a young boy that gets stranded on an old, remote planet that’s trying to find his way home.
Your mission is to unravel this huge conspiracy that keeps the planet mesmerized in order to get out. But robots are trying to stop you and you have to befriend strange allies along the way. I don’t want ruin the whole game… but this will turn around the way you think about 2D gaming. There’s a powerful force that can be manipulated in some very cool ways in order to get you through levels.
What I love about Pid is that you can play two player co-op and help each other get through puzzles. Sounds like an awesome holiday gift, if you ask me.
NAUGHTY BEAR: PANIC IN PARADISE – Level UP’s Cyber Monday Giveaway: 1 XBLA code and 1 PSN will be given to two unique HelloGiggles readers!
It obviously begs the question: who’s been Naughty this year? Maybe this game is for you.
Despite some hairy reviews, I’ve been a longtime fan of Mr. Naughty Bear – especially the concept. Maybe chalk it up to the fact that I’ve done a lot of B horror flicks, but this game makes me laugh! You play Naughty, a stuffed bear who (in the initial game) wasn’t invited to the Teddy Bear Picnic and went on a rampage. In Panic In Paradise, you yet again get to be the silly villain in a horror movie about Teddy Bears on a vacation. Naughty Bear wasn’t invited on this luxury holiday, and has been shunned by the inhabitants of Paradise Island. Armed with a hit-list of bears that have wronged him, Naughty is going to make them pay, one by one.
The entire idea is hilarious and isn’t supposed to be taken as seriously as some other reviewers have. Yes there are some collision issues along the way but the HUMOR is what keeps one playing. Instead of blood, it’s stuffing! It’s so over-the-top ridiculous. I find this kind of gameplay far less intense and aggressive than some more realistic FPS games on the market. Panic in Paradise offers more weapons, abilities, achievements and costumes as you play along. The only thing missing for me is the multiplayer element that made the first one such a cool party game.
