Becoming Tami-Lynn: My Interview With Ted's Girlfriend, Jessica Barth Chrissa Hardy

Try for a second, to imagine a toy from your childhood coming to life. How crazy/awesome would that be? I think I’d be able to overlook the strangeness of it all if my “My Buddy” doll was able to verbally express that he hated his hat and his bowl haircut just as much as I did. And what if, years later, he turned into a vulgar, pot-smoking mooch?

OR, have you ever wondered what it would be like to date a toy? Okay, maybe not. But after watching Ted, and practically cramping up from uncontrollable laughter, I couldn’t help but wonder what it must be like to play the part of “teddy bear’s gf.” Luckily, I had the opportunity to chat with the lovely Jessica Barth, who plays Ted’s girlfriend in the film, and got the scoop on what it was like to film scenes with a stuffed bear, the hours spent perfecting her Boston accent and the stars she hopes to work with (possibly on Family Guy), in the future.

So, you’re a Philly native?
Philly native, yes I am.

Because as a New England girl, I have to say, your accent was SPOT ON. Was that difficult for you to learn?
The accent was the most important thing to Seth, in terms of me getting this part. He’s like, “you HAVE to get the dialect.” So we had a dialect coach that worked with us, and I watched Ben Affleck and Matt Damon movies. Yes, hours spent listening to it and working on it.

Did you film with a teddy bear? Obviously Ted was CGI, but did you at least have a teddy bear to look at while shooting?
What we did was, we filmed with a stuffed animal. Sometimes it was just kind of, an eye line and we had to remember where we were. Seth would give us lines and he was in character and in the scene, so it was really natural.

You’ve worked with Seth on Family Guy as well (Jessica has played Kate Hudson and Sookie Stackhouse on the show), is he as magnificently brilliant as he seems?
Haha. He’s beyond that, yes. He’s one of those guys that’s incredibly brilliant but, doesn’t make you feel any less brilliant when you’re around him. He’s a joy to be around on set because I think he knows exactly what he wants and he has a really calm way of getting exactly what he needs out of you.

That’s got to be a really great working environment too then.
Oh, it was so fun. The best set I’ve ever been on. I mean, obviously, Mark Wahlberg was amazing, Mila Kunis was amazing, it was just a great set to be on.

If you could choose a toy from your childhood to come to life, what would it be?
I actually, I don’t know if you remember this, but I had the Julie Doll and I thought we would always be best friends.

Oh, you mean her? Julie Doll (Image via dollinfo.com)

From the commercials, I actually thought she could talk back to me. But she just came with all of these stock phrases, of course. I was a little disappointed when I get her for Christmas and realized that she couldn’t actually talk back.

Ted chose a Hootie and the Blowfish classic as his go-to karaoke song. Do you have one?
Oh God. Me and karaoke….. I love karaoke. I’ll belt out “Total Eclipse of the Heart!” Or any Bruce Springsteen song.

Ted and John got to party with their 80’s hero, Sam Jones, AKA Flash Gordon. Which 80’s icon would you party with, if given the chance?
Bruce Springsteen. Bruce Springsteen for sure. I think I would die if I ever met him. I’ve actually tried to get Seth to have him on Family Guy, I’m not sure he would do it. But yeah, I would love it!

What was your favorite scene in Ted?
Oh, the dinner scene. That was so much fun! I just got to say so many funny and vulgar things. It was just phenomenal. And everyone was just so great to work with.

The cast of Ted certainly was phenomenal, obviously. Who would you like to work with in the future?
I’d really love to work with Robert De Niro or Leonardo DiCaprio. As far as women, I’d love to work with Elizabeth Banks. I just think she’s hilarious. And Tina Fey, of course.

Not that you needed another reason to see Ted, if you haven’t already. I mean, potty-mouthed teddy bears, Fenway Pahhk, Mila Kunis, a very spectacular Ryan Reynolds cameo (yes, that’s right!), Christmas wishes, and Seth MacFarlane? It’s got it all. And now you know a little bit more about the girl who stole Ted’s heart with some produce sex and seriously inappropriate table manners. A big thanks to Jessica for being totally rad and taking the time to speak with me.
