In case you forgot, here are some quick descriptions of the ladies. And then I want to know – Which So-Called Girl Are You?

Angela Chase (played by Claire Danes): “Sometimes it seems like we’re all living in some kind of prison. And the crime is how much we hate ourselves. It’s good to get really dressed up once in a while. And admit the truth: that when you really look closely? People are so strange and so complicated that they’re actually…beautiful. Possibly even me.”

Angela Chase falls in the category of most dramatic teenager ever. Her ability to over-hyper-analyze every situation is perfection. Her inner monologues straddled the line between poetic and psycho, but somehow, on the outside, she appeared average. She had an obsessive crush on a guy who was out of her league, yet she proved herself to be too good for him. She struggled with her looks, her friendships, her parents, her sister, her neighbor, her schoolwork, her teachers, her hair…Basically she could turn any situation into a major life crisis. And call me cynical but I found Angela’s constant fighting with her mother completely cathartic.

Rayanne Graff (played by A.J. Langer): “People throwing themselves at people is, like, the basis of civilization.”

Rayanne was the coolest. She never wore her hair the same way twice, dressed like she stepped right out of an awesome 60‘s/90’s fusion music video, and didn’t give a “F.” Okay, so that last part was also a major flaw. Due to a non-existent relationship with her absentee father and a non-conventional relationship with her tarot card reading, free bird mother, she developed a drinking problem, which she often mixed with sex and drug problems. She exuded uber self confidence, but those who knew her well knew that she was more often dealing with self-consciousness. Although she often didn’t know how to show it, she loved her best friends. She made plenty of bad decisions where they were concerned (worst of which being the time she drunkenly slept with the love of Angela’s high school life), but you almost felt bad for her when she did these things – Like maybe she didn’t know any better? And there were plenty of times when her loyalty to her friends shined through, mostly when no one was looking.

Sharon Cherski (played by Devon Odessa): “I think it really all comes down to what they kept drilling into us in Girl Scouts.” 

Sharon was Angela’s best friend growing up, but their interests and attitudes caused them to drift apart through the years. Sharon was on the yearbook committee, in the band, and a volunteer at the Teen Hotline. She was not a huge fan of Rayanne, or of Angela’s choice to befriend her. I always thought she was jealous of the girl who took her best friend away. She appeared the most “goody two shoes” of all of the ladies, often making comments and killer facial expressions towards Angela’s rumored (and Rayanne’s self-proclaimed) promiscuity, but in actuality she lost her virginity way before Angela to her on-again/off-again boyfriend Kyle. Sharon even knows where “The Pleasure Center” is.  She seemed to have a relatively healthy relationship with her mother, who was close friends with Angela’s mother.

So, if you look deep inside at all your quirks and unique qualities, which Parks & Rec character shines through the most? This one can be tough, so let me break it down.

The Ladies of Pawnee:

Leslie Knope (played by Amy Poehler): “He is attractive, and charming, and his family employs half the town. But so what? I am a lifelong government bureaucrat who’s well versed in the issues. And those are the kind of sexy qualifications that win elections.”

Leslie is the best friend, and girlfriend, in the whole wide world. She listens to your wishes and dreams, remembers them and stops at nothing to make them all come true.   She also makes sure to chase and catch her own dreams. She is intelligent and fun and caring. She is a political force to be reckoned with, and has big goals for her town and its people. She fights for what it is right and would make a great president of the United States of America someday…

Ann Perkins (played by Rashida Jones): “No offense, but maybe you think I’m going too fast ’cause you’re going too slow with Ben!”

Ann works as a nurse, but always makes time to help out her BFF Leslie with whatever project she’s tackling. She appears to be stable and logical, but when you look closely, you realize she has almost as many screws loose as her friends in Pawnee. Lost in love, she has dated almost every type of man there is and has been criticized for conforming to her BF’s beliefs. Currently she is planning on having a baby with her ex-BF as the carefully selected sperm donor. I think she will make a great mom.

April Ludgate (played by Aubrey Plaza): “I passed up a gay Halloween party to be here. Do you know how much fun gay Halloween parties are? Last year I saw three Jonas Brothers make out with three Robert Pattinsons. It was amazing.”

This is a girl who will tell it like it is, especially if it’s going to be insulting. Some may call her strange, and she rarely cracks a smile. Still, if you look hard enough, you will find April has a soft spot.  She is intelligent and talented, and often underestimates herself. She was fortunate enough to find a husband whose hobbies and interests are as out there as her own, and supports everything he does. And although she may come across as selfish at times, she will always come through for her friends when they really (really, really) need her.

Donna Meagle (played by Retta): “This spaceship keyboard is driving me crazy! I’m down to one word a minute. And the word is ‘perfishisklep’.”

Donna is sassy, witty and down to business. I wouldn’t mess with her. She knows what she wants and when it’s time to “Treat Yo’ Self”. Donna never ceases to surprise and amaze her co-workers and friends, popping up in situations where she would not be expected. She also seems to know everybody who is anybody and always gets the job done.

And because I love them all so much, I also had to include quotes from some of the fellas of Pawnee:

Andy Dwyer (played by Chris Pratt): “The band has had a few different names over the years. When we started, we were Teddy Bear Suicide, but then we changed it to Mouse Rat. Then we were God Hates Figs, Department of Homeland Obscurity, Flames for Flames, Muscle Confusion, Nothing Rhymes With Orange, then Everything Rhymes With Orange, Punch Face Champions, Rad Wagon, Puppy Pendulum, Possum Pendulum, Penis Pendulum, Handrail Suicide, Angel Snack, Just the Tip, Threeskin… [long pause] Oh, Jet Black Pope. We went back to Mouse Rat, and now we are Scarecrow Boat. God, when I hear myself say Scarecrow Boat out loud I kinda hate it…”

Ron Swanson (played by Nick Offerman): “I don’t like loud noises and people making a fuss. And I especially don’t like people celebrating because they know a piece of private information about me. Plus the whole thing is a scam: birthdays were invented by Hallmark to sell cards.”

Ben Wyatt (played by Adam Scott): “Nothing is wrong, just do your job. And they would never cancel Game of Thrones. It’s a crossover hit. It’s not just for fantasy enthusiasts, they’re telling human stories in a fantasy world.”

Chris Traeger (played by Rob Lowe): “I have a resting heart rate of 28 beats per minute. The doctors who studied me said that my heart could, literally, pump jet fuel up into a jet.”

Tom Haverford (played by Aziz Ansari): “Last night at approximately 2:30am, I woke up from a dream that felt so real it had to be a premonition. Me, Drake and the T-Mobile girl were playing baccarat on a private jet. Ann Perkins walks up to me and says “Tommy, tomorrow night, I’m taking you back”. Then Blue Ivy Carter high-fived me and gave me $40 million dollars. It was all so real.”

Oh yeah. Or Jerry Gergich (played by Jim O’Heir). But who cares about Jerry, anyway? (J/K! Poor Jerry!)

So do any of these characters speak to who you are? Perhaps you’re more of an entrepreneurial sidekick such as Jean-Ralphio. Or maybe you’re as crazy as Tammy One or Tammy Two. Or perhaps you identify with the The Douche. Or maybe your spirit animal is Pawnee’s own Li’l Sebastian.

I think I’m an Ann with a hint of Donna. I wish I could be more like a Leslie but I don’t have that kind of energy! Either way, I love watching all of these characters interact, even the ones I don’t identify with at all.

So, if we were in elementary school art class right now and someone asked you, “Which Saved by the Bell babe are you?,” who would you pick?!

Kelly Kapowski (played by Tiffani [Amber] Thiessen): “Beat-b-b-b-beat, Go Bayside!”

We have to start with the quintessential hottest high school chick, in my opinion, ever. Her style was totally ’80s, but when you watch the show in reruns, her look still holds up. Unlike many typical “most popular girl in school” characters, Kelly was sweet, honest and virginal. She wasn’t a genius, but she wasn’t a bimbo, either. She was head cheerleader and captain of many teams. She ended up marrying her high school sweetheart, but she definitely dabbled with love in between, dating her favorite TV star (until she realized he smoked pot), her college boy boss from The Max (until she realized he was a cheating creepazoid) and her professor in college (until she realized Zack was the “one” for real), among a few others. For the most part, this Bayside babe was innocent. She did cheat on Zack, but she felt really bad about it. She was a loving older sister and devoted daughter – and the most supportive ex-girlfriend anyone could have.

Jessie Spano (played by Elizabeth Berkley): “You know what they say – big muscles, small brains.”

Jessie was the smartest girl of the group, but she was no stranger to doing stupid things. She took a play rehearsal kiss with her best friend’s boyfriend too far, she tried to sabotage her new step-brother’s life and, of course, say it with me now, she became addicted to caffeine pills. A pivotal part of the Hot Sundaes and a sometimes part of the cheerleading squad, school radio show, glee club and more, Jessie kept herself busy with more than just academics. She was constantly getting into trouble by the adults for fighting for what she believed in, which was usually environmental or feminist rights related. Still, she spent most of her high school days loving her machismo boyfriend AC Slater. She struggled with her height throughout her years at Bayside. Somewhere along the line, Jessie left the crew for bigger and better things, but she did make it to Zack and Kelly’s wedding in the nick of time.

Lisa Turtle (played by Lark Voorhies): “15 seconds? I can’t even get to the bottom of my purse in 15 seconds.”

Lisa was a sassy one. She was seriously into fashion and shopping. Out of all of her friends, she was the most willing to date outside of the group. The only child of rich parents, Lisa was spoiled and proud of it. One summer when all of her friends were working at a beach club, she was there with them, except she was a member. She had heart, though, and potential to make her doctor parents proud someday. She spent most of her high school life trying to avoid Screech’s geeky crush on her, even though she could never fully reject him without feeling sorry for the dweeb. You couldn’t get anything past her. She told it like it was. And she was the only one who stuck around long enough to get to know Tori.

Tori Scott (played by Leanna Creel): “Should I be impressed?”…”Well I’m not.”

Tori joined Bayside way late. I’m not sure where she came from or why, but there she was. Tori was a tomboy with a rough attitude, but she quickly developed a school girl crush on her arch nemesis for a day, Zack. She tried to be uber feminine but that just wasn’t her, and so she quickly put back on her motorcycle riding leather jacket, and scored the boy anyway. Tori had a “know-it-all” attitude, but would admit to being wrong when she was proved so. She was a killer mechanic, an awesome graduation song lyricist and a pretty good doo-wop lip syncher.

Stacey Carosi (played by Leah Remini): “Don’t worry daddy – I’ll give him a lot of close, personal attention.”

I know she was only on six episodes, but they replayed that summer season so many times I feel like I know Stacey so well. She was from New York and flew out to Cali for the summer to help her Papa Bear run the Malibu Sands Beach Club. She had an east coast attitude which clashed with Zack’s surfer dude persona, but ultimately opposites attracted and they had a summer romance. Stacey was a daddy’s girl, but knew when to stand up for herself and put Mr. Carosi in his place. She was a no nonsense tough chick with a soft spot for her friends and family.

I realize this show is long off the air, but what can I say? It holds up. It portrays high school drama in a more innocent way than we’ll probably ever see on television again. So, which Saved by the Bell babe are you?!

As we all do in real life, each girl brings a little something special to the table. So, which GIRL are you?!

Hannah Horvath (played by Lena Dunham): “No one could ever hate me as much as I hate myself, okay? So any mean thing someone’s gonna think of to say about me, I’ve already said to me, about me, probably in the last half hour!”

Hannah is probably the most self-deprecating of all the ladies, consistently proving to be her own worst critic. Still, she somehow manages to also be her own biggest fan. Her body is covered in tattoos of illustrations from children’s books, and she has few inhibitions when it comes to nudity and sexuality. While she is constantly falling apart, she is somehow the glue that keeps the girls together. She is clearly in love with her on again/off again boyfriend, but does not want to make herself vulnerable enough to stay in it. Hannah is a budding writer trying to make it on her own in Brooklyn, without the help of her parents. She wants to prove she doesn’t need them, but is secretly grateful to have their support just a phone call away.

Marnie Michaels (played by Allison Williams): “Sometimes being really good all the time feels really bad. But I’m on a journey. It’s my journey and I’m okay.”

Marnie is a classic beauty, but that doesn’t stop her from being insecure. Having established the most stable lifestyle early on – loving boyfriend, respectable job, nice apartment – Marnie appears to be the most put together. But as everything stable in her life begins to unravel, she fights to regain control wherever possible. And even when she has what she thinks she wants, she always wondering about what she doesn’t have. Security comforts her, but it also bores her. She can be judgmental at times, but she values the meaning of “best friend” and tries to uphold her end of the friendship…Just don’t make her feel like she’s being taken advantage of in any way, because she won’t be shy about letting you know.

Shoshanna Shapiro: (played by Zosia Mamet): “I’m like the least virginy virgin ever.”

Shoshanna is totes a little crazy – in a fun, sweet, innocent, annoying but funny (so you forgive her) kind of way. She speaks in abbreviations, crazy made up phrases and pop culture references. She is the most inexperienced of all of her friends, and looks to them for guidance. Too bad she doesn’t realize her friends are not the best spirit guides. She is just starting to come out of her shell and try new things, and may be on the path to taking this newfound wild child too far. When it comes down to it, she’ll always be a little naive and honest to a fault.

Jessa Johansson: (played by Jemima Kirke): “I’m offended by all of the ‘Supposed To’s.’ I don’t like women telling other women what to do or how to do it or when to do it.” 

Jessa is Shoshanna’s cousin, but her total opposite. She is a free spirit. She dresses like a Downton Abbey metropolitan hippie and lives each day like the one before was her last. She’s already been pregnant (but didn’t have the baby), married and divorced, which is no surprise considering she does everything to the extreme, but never forever. She’s lived all around the world and this reflects in her multicultural ways. There is no figuring this girl out or tying her down, and that’s exactly how she wants it. She’s pretty without trying. She’s not on Facebook. She’s a huge flake, totally selfish and a horrible friend. Yet somehow, you want to be around her. I blame most of this on her serious parental issues.

When it comes to these girls, I can see a little of me in each of them, but I think overall I’m a Marnie. I still have Hannah-like thoughts cross my mind, and Shoshanna-like things come out of my mouth. And I finally had a Jessa connection in the episode where she visits her dad. But when it comes down to it, I’m a Marnie (Even though I secretly wish I could be a Jessa.).

First and foremost forever: Dylan McKay on Beverly Hills, 90210

Everyone who knows me knows I have loved Luke Perry since I first laid eyes on him in the halls of West Bev. The only other girl in this world who was allowed to share him with me was Brenda Walsh. (And Toni Marchette was acceptable, but I’m not going to lie and say I wasn’t more than ready to console him when she was killed). I had posters of him lining my walls as a child, along with playing cards, his doll, a giant pin, and whatever other Dylan swag I could find. Throughout the years, I have supported Luke’s acting career as much as possible (even though I can’t get into those westerns he does), and am on constant lookout for him on the streets of LA. Even if I don’t meet him until he’s 70 years old, it will still be my goal to kiss him on the mouth.

Benny the Jet Rodriguez on The Sandlot

If you’ve ever seen The Sandlot, which you should have, then you will know exactly why I loved Benny the Jet. He was cool, and nice, and a hero, and a legend, and the hottest 12 year old ever. I shotgunned Benny the first time I ever watched the movie with my BFF Jen, and so she got stuck with Yeah-Yeah, who was totally cute, but no Benny. Years later Jen told me Benny had been cheating on me the whole time with her. I’m still pissed.

Tony Lucca on The Mickey Mouse Club

Tony Lucca, one of the stars of The New MMC was one of my first older men. If you remember the Mickey Mouse Club cast with Justin, Britney, Christina and Ryan Gosling, you might remember Tony Lucca. He was always paired up with Keri Russell (who I was jealous of the whole time, obviously). I wasn’t religiously watching The Voice last year, but one day I had it on in the background and heard his name as a contestant. It was amazing. I hadn’t thought about him in years. Since then I have started following him on Instagram and we are back together.

Justin Timberlake

Duh. I had a mini crush on JTT when he was a little boy on the MMC, but as you will read above, my true love at that time was the more mature, 16 year old Tony Lucca. So it wasn’t until his bleached blond *NSync days that my true obsession began. And this one really did border on obsession. When asked, “Who is Santina’s boyfriend?,” I had my one year old brother trained to respond, “Justin Timberwake.” I obviously hated Britney Spears’ guts (even though I still secretly loved all of her songs and videos). I went to the concerts and cried when I thought he looked in my general direction in any way. (By the way, remember my BFF Jen? Her *NSync BF was JC. The only time he ever cheated on her with me was during their “No Strings Attached” HBO concert version of “Digital Getdown.” Don’t worry, I told her.) I have since moved on from Justin, although we had an amicable breakup in the end, and I wish him the best in everything he does.

Jordan Catalano on My So Called Life

Jordan was probably my sexiest boyfriend to date. I mean, a musician who cuts school and drinks and smokes and won’t commit or admit he loves you?! What could be sexier to a budding teenage girl?! The scene where he finally grabs Angela’s hand in the hallway while Buffalo Tom plays in the background – OMG, that was vicariously the best day of my life.

Steve on Full House

Sorry, DJ Tanner, but Steve and I had a thing on the side. Even when he went on to do Aladdin, I had a crush on his cartoon persona. I would think that’s weird, but I’m pretty sure most guys would bang Jessica Rabbit if given the chance, so I’m gonna go with it’s normal…

Spoilers

Usually the shows that I need to watch live are award shows and competition shows, for fear of social media spoilers. There’s little worse in the TV world than accidentally finding out who wins, or who gets kicked off, or who fought who, before you’ve had a chance to watch it. Sometimes you just can’t take that risk.

The problem I’ve yet to solve now that I’m staying in Cali is when there’s something being broadcast on the East Coast first, I have to stay off Twitter from 5pm until sometimes midnight. Don’t you guys think there should be a “hide other time zone tweets” feature on Twitter by now?!

Tweet-alongs

Watching the Golden Globes or the Oscars or American Idol will never be the same again without constantly refreshing my Twitter feed. When I think something someone said was the dumbest thing I’ve heard in the last four minutes, I feel comforted to read and know instantly I am not alone. No longer do we have to wait for homeroom or water cooler time to find out what everyone else thought of that crazy thing we all watched. Plus it gives us something to do during the commercials!

And I have totally started watching TV shows because of Twitter. If I see enough hashtags about a certain thing, I can’t help but want to join in on the conversation. I didn’t even care about The Bachelor this year until I saw so many people tweeting and FBook status-ing about it. And so I caught up and got hooked and join the Tweetfest.

Interactivity

Thanks to Twitter, television has become even more interactive. Remember how certain shows, (such as Bozo the Clown a million years ago) would include a “personal hello” to a list of names read off on a sheet paper? When I was little I always wished I’d get a “hello”, but with a name like Santina, it never came. But the times, they are a changin’. Even someone like me, with a name that would never make a generic Bozo list, has the chance to get recognition from my favorite TV character. And it’s way more personal.

Scandal is one of the most tweeted about shows on television, which appears to be a solid factor in the reason for the program’s staying power. With live tweets from the cast, behind the scenes pics and #AskScandal hashtags, this show is pulling in more viewers every season.

If only this was going on when I was younger! I can only imagine how pumped I would’ve been if I could’ve asked Dylan McKay, or Joey Potter, or Uncle Jesse a question about something I just watched, and there was a glimmer of hope that they might answer me. I was satisfied when I wrote them a snail mail fan letter and received a standard signed postcard months later. So when modern day shows like Scandal make instant gratification and inside scoops available to their viewers through Twitter, it doesn’t surprise me to hear they’re raking in the ratings.

Thanks to Twitter, we can have it all. I can watch BRAVO and instantly know what my middle school best friend from NJ, Melissa Nikosey, is thinking, AND what Real Housewife of NJ Melissa Gorga is thinking.

Pew Research Center recently reported “Twitter is not a reliable indicator of public opinion.” Maybe it isn’t the most precise representation of the entire world. Sure, it can’t accurately predict who will win the next election – Half the people tweeting about it may not even be eligible to vote for one reason or another, whether they’re under 18, not a citizen, or just an annoying person who has opinions but does nothing about them. But if you click that “discover” button, you will find out what is happening right now in the world, and what thousands of people think about it. And sometimes it can make you passionate about something you didn’t even know you cared about.

How much do you let Twitter influence you? Do tweet-a-long shows encourage you to watch more? Does it affect if you watch the show live or DVR it? Did you ever start watching a show because of a hashtag?

A girl named Iqra from Lahore, Pakistan recently did her brother a huge solid and disguised herself as him in order to help him pass a test so he can get into the college of his choice. He didn’t think he could score well enough on his own. Unfortunately for them, they got caught in the act by the inspection team.

This is obviously immoral to begin with, but did you also know that the boy is studying to become a doctor? This might explain why some of the doctors I’ve come across in my life have been less than stellar. Perhaps their sisters threw on a backwards baseball cap and a pair of overalls and took a few tests for them?!

I think that’s the part about all of this that’s bugging me the most. I’m not going to sit here on a high horse and say I’ve never cheated on a test before, but if I wanted to be a doctor and put people’s lives in my hands, I’d wanna know my ish. What happens when/if this guy makes it to MD status? “Hey sis, I’m not sure how to perform this surgery and I’m too nervous I’ll mess it up – Can you just do it for me? Just put on these scrubs, cap and mask and I doubt anyone will notice.”

Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating a little. It was just one test, as far as we know…

I just hope this girl Igre is doing something fabulous with her own life. I don‘t know their whole story, but for some reason I’m picturing the olden days (and sometimes still present day) when a woman would write a novel but have to use a man’s name to get credit. Hopefully she’s already super successful on her own, and not just helping her bro get ahead in life.

At least we know this is a brother/sister pair who is looking out for each other. I feel like Claire Dunphy would totally do something like this for Mitchell on Modern Family. And I KNOW Tia and Tamera have done it (without the dressing up part, of course).

I am a Yosemite Junior Ranger. I went to Yosemite recently and accidentally brought home two sticks. I know I’m not supposed to take things from the park, so I am sending them back. Please put them in nature.

Can we get a collective “awww” going for a little girl with morals and honor?!

Remember those days? When you were young and fresh and innocent? Before the world jaded you, when you would catch fireflies for the fun of it, and then let them go back into the sky to light up another night? Now, most of us don’t think twice before swatting away a flying creature. I mean, I would still never kill a firefly, but a regular fly is getting swatted on my watch. 

And I’ve left the store forgetting to pay for the case of water under the cart and not returned it, so I KNOW I wouldn’t be wasting a stamp to return some twigs. But some people believe all things that are living should be respected, including plants. And maybe those sticks were living with their stick family in Yosemite and this girl just made them the happiest sticks in the world by sending them home. (It is also possible that I sound like a total nature freak weirdo right now, but how will we really ever know…?)

A park ranger wrote back to Evie thanking her for her efforts to preserve nature, and sent her an extra Junior Ranger badge. He also promised to return the sticks back to their natural habitat.

We all get older and our morals change. Of course we don’t all turn into thieves, but I don’t know many adults who would do what little Evie did. Except for Leslie Knope, of course. And little Evie might just be the next best future Parks & Recreation leader this world has ever seen. This may be an extreme act of kindness, but it is a great little reminder to respect our planet, stay true to our beliefs and try to do the right thing, even if it may be a little inconvenient.
