“So you wanna be a rock and roll star / Well listen now to what I say / Just get an electric guitar / And take some time / And learn how to play” – The Counting Crows

Musician Nataly Dawn wanted a career in music, but as we know, it’s a lot of livin’ on nickels, eating processed meats from cans and the odd psychedelic. Well, Nataly Dawn was having none of that. She didn’t sit around waiting for a label to sign her, groupies to glom or barter for weed. As an unknown songstress, she sang and strummed her guitar into being a YouTube sensation. It all started when she was a senior at Stamford University and part of the musical duo Pomplamoose with Jack Conte. Her dad called her and said, “I think you should give your music career a chance. I’ll give you six months to make things work.”

What would you achieve if you had 24 weeks to do it? I talked with Dawn and she clued me into how she made the music sing.

Dawn: It’s not that I didn’t want a music career. It’s that I didn’t think it was something one could do and still be a responsible human being. My parents gave me six months to start making a living in music by myself. We were more prolific in that time than we’d been all along. When you get too comfortable, you stop putting stuff out so much.

LS: In music years, six months is zero minutes.

We started to strategize. We’re not so much a band as a start-up. Pomplamoose is a start-up. Nataly Dawn is a start-up. That’s why we’re able to function. We had 10,000 subscribers – these were people we had never met who were buying our music online. We realized this was a way for us to maybe make a living as artists if we kept putting up videos on YouTube. We went to NYC and produced another artist’s EP – her name is Julia Nunes, who we discovered, if you search her name on YouTube, came up for The Beatles before they did. This was before their actual videos were online, because she covered all their songs. We had a revelation that we have to do popular covers. We decided to cover ‘Single Ladies’. It was the perfect time to cover that song. It was right when the VMA’s were broadcasting, when Kanye made an ass of himself. We put it right up on YouTube. Artists need to start taking advantage of technology and thinking about what is current, that’s how they’ll get their music out. It doesn’t mean you’ll be covering ‘Single Ladies’ for the rest of your life, but you do have to start somewhere.

LS: How do you run your music business?

If I’m ever not doing something while I’m holding a bagel, that means there’s something wrong. It involves me and my team busting our asses all the time. Some artists feel that their workday starts when they get on stage and it ends when they get off the stage. My workday starts as soon as I can plug in my laptop and start editing videos together. I start Tweeting, Facebooking, Instagraming and blogging. We run into people who are technically in far more successful bands who are living way more uncomfortably and on the road all year. Jack and I set out to be musicians and we became YouTubers. Funny this is, YouTubers live far more comfortably than musicians. We also own all our music and make all the decisions. I knew that when I saw our tour itinerary, we were in for one hell of a drive. I wanted to travel in comfort and style. I was able to get Hyundai on board and they gave us two brand new Santa Fes and covered all of our gas money.

LS: You’d be surprised at what you can get if you ask for things. How did you work that?

I know, right? People ask me, “How did you open for Ben Folds Five on their last tour?” I said, “Well, I called him and asked if I could.” It was the same thing with the CEO of Hyundai. He’s a really cool guy and has stayed in touch with us after we did some holiday 2010 spots for them. He’s really amazing for wanting to invest in artists.

LS: What have been some of the other benefits to having grown your fanbase online?

We really have been so fortunate to have grown such a fan base online. I can do a ‘Stageit’ show. Example: we were supposed to do a show in Toronto, but we weren’t able to get there. I put up a video on YouTube and said, “Sorry, Toronto, we’re not going to be able to see you, but we’ll put up a show on Stageit.” It’s pay what you want. The amazing thing about Stageit is that you can tip as the performer performs. By the end of the show I had made $1,300 from the 200 people who showed up online.

LS: That’s amazing.

Dawn: I know. Feel free to call me anytime if you have more questions, I’ll be here, bagel in one hand, the other on my computer’s keyboard!

I’ve always known comedian, NPR and Moth Storyslam host, Ophira Eisenberg to be a lady. Well-dressed, smart and congenial, Eisenberg is aces when it comes to being a classy broad. When I heard she had a book coming out called, Screw Everyone: Sleeping My Way to Monogamy, I could not get enough. To me, she’d always been with her husband Jonathan and I never thought of her past sex life. I mean, that would be creepy, “I wonder how many lov-ah’s that Eisenberg chick took on before the ring?” Now, I had to know and so should you.

Throughout the pages of her memoir, Ophira fesses up to having a healthy sexual appetite that unfortunately is only acceptable for men in our society. It’s 2013. Twenty years ago we thought we’d be holograms riding space scooters by now. Meanwhile, all we got is DVR and technology that gives a 40-year-old man, who lives with his parents, the ability to ‘internet persona’ his way into making you jealous that he even exists. Come. On. Let’s evolve our thinking a teeny bit. If you’re safe and feel sexual experimentation makes your evenings better, then do it girl!

Screw Everyone is one of the funniest, bravest works of non-fiction my eyes have come upon. I’m proud to know Ophira and that she took the time to share her humor, love and lust with us. We met up on New York City’s Lower East Side and chatted about raucous romps, women’s rights and how to know when someone is worth your time.

LS: You left your boyfriend back home in Calgary and spent a year traveling Australia in the early nineties. You wrote about calling him collect from payphones.

Eisenberg: Payphones!

LS: What the wha? Now we can cyberstalk. When I was in high school we stalked the good old fashioned way. We called it “the psycho drive.” The stalker had someone speed by your crush’s house as you ducked down in the passenger’s seat to see if he/she was home. After our conclusion- the stalker would buy his/her accomplice a slurpie at the Quickie Mart and we’d go home. Now we have Instagram and you can say, “Well, Brent is snowboarding in Utah this weekend.”

Eisenberg: In what set of circumstances should people be subjected to seeing who their exes are dating and then seeing photos of them at parties?

LS: I heard that a lot of twenty-something’s didn’t understand the lack of texting in your relationships. What was that like?

Eisenberg: There were so many miscommunications before the internet that would drive you crazy. The waiting. The waiting. We were all 18th Century women, pining for a letter to arrive. There was nothing instantaneous. While I was traveling Australia, I would tell the hostel workers what city I was traveling to next, and they would send me letters and packages to the “postmaster general” of that location. The funny thing is that in each city that I went to there was a package or letter waiting for me. As far as I know, I didn’t miss one. It seems insane, but it worked. I wrote that guy everyday. I mean… I did spend half my trip at a post office.

LS: You know why the U.S. Post Office announced that there’s no longer mail delivery on Saturday? Because there’s not enough mail anymore!

Eisenberg: They at the post office think, ah that girl with the love letter, she’ll be fine. She’s got a phone now that she can type it up and send it from. I have to say that calling someone and having them not call you back is not as bad as now when you text someone, and they don’t text you back. Just based on the instantaneous nature, it’s way harsher to me.

LS: Now you can see when someone’s writing you back.

Eisenberg: I know, the little bubble… you’re sitting there thinking, what is he saying? I’m thinking about it now, and I feel like Michael, who I wrote about in the book and I would have figured things out quicker if we had smartphones to play out our romance.

LS: Wow.

Eisenberg: We communicate now on Facebook.

LS: Does he know he’s a character in the book?

Eisenberg: That’s a good question. He knows there is a book. We actually got together five years after we’d ended things and I told him my version of the story. And he told me his side just based on what he was going through. He did not see my desperation. He did not see my love. He saw someone who was unraveling. He was confused if I wanted to connect with him at all.

LS: How do you feel about putting your personal self out there?

Eisenberg: Before the book came out a few people asked, “What do you think about how on page two you come out and say you’re a slut?”

1. Babes need to own it.

There were a few women in advertising in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s who were bold enough to hurtle over the typewriters and go from secretary to successful copywriters. Some, like Jane Maas, went on to hold one of the first executive posts in the industry ever held by a female. The infamous Mary Wells went on to found her own agency, Wells, Rich, Greene. I’m not saying I want Peggy to split in half like an ion and that we clone her. My point is, it would be nice to see another woman or two be hired as a creative team this season who happen to be smart AND sexy. And have them have zero interest in showing Don anything other than their brains. Okay, okay, Don is super attractive. Maybe they could pretend to accidentally drop a pencil, slowly bend over and pick it up while he watches. But no more than that!

2. Babes need to stop pretending Roger is still good for sexy time.

I find Roger amusing. But the man is, like, 52 and has already had a heart attack. He’s not a nice person. He’s not Wall Street loaded. In what stratosphere would Joan Holloway have street sex with him THEN have his baby? Where in the deepest recesses of your mind do you accept that last season a gorgeous, leggy, Jewish mid-20-something babe married him? And that he broke up with her because he has so many other babes after him, even hotter and younger than she is? Could you picture any 25-year-old woman you know waltzing into a bar and saying, “Hey guys, look at my hubby who is the same age as chef Paula Deen!” NO. NO. NOPE. I don’t care that he’s a partner. So is Don. Oh, and Christ on a cracker, so is Joan! (God, she’s hot.)

Look, Roger has got sex appeal in a bird-like, silver fox way, but with all the other men in the office who, say, aren’t their dad’s age, the babes need to go elsewhere. Let’s leave old Rodge to his bourbon, Paul Malls and someone who remembers the Model T.

3. Product Placement! (FREE stuff for us!)

Mad Men’s writing staff needs to leverage the fact that Bert Cooper is a Colonel Sanders’ doppelganger. KFC will sell buckets if this happens! I once had a vegan tell me that chickens are “disgusting, dirty animals”, but outside of that, I have yet to meet a human being who scoffs at a paper plate full of crispy fried cluck. “Mmmmmm,” says the greater populace in unison while combining said savory fried delight with mashed potatoes and coleslaw.

We see so very little of Bert, and when we do it’s a flash, like he’s just taken an enema and can’t stay long. Have him in a scene for more than two seconds AND show him enjoying a bucket KFC with some of their popular biscuits. Don and Roger can have a laugh at his expense, taunting, “Is that guy pictured on the bucket your more successful twin brother?” Cue the interactive promotional tie-in where viewers can tweet at AMC and KFC to vie for some coupons! #FREECHICKEN

4. A satellite office.

You know every corporate person loves to be able to say, “I have a friend named Gianni in our Milan office.” I’d adore it if Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce were forced to open somewhere rural, just for laughs. They could, say, land a big money client who is located in “The closest city is in the next state, U.S.A,” and the client demands an office be located there. Picture Don with his $100 shoeshine trying to order a Manhattan in the middle of a dry town with a one-lane bowling alley and a shop that sells everything its townspeople need, like muumuus, nasal hair clippers and lawnmowers. As a writer, this is how I’d start the scene: “We open on Don drinking generic brand soda. A woman-man type (you really can’t tell,) seated next to him, orders a screwdriver. Don appears shocked when an actual toolbox arrives at the table.”

5. A good haunting.

Season 6 is set in the late 60s– Ghostbusters is a good 15 years away from being made BUT that doesn’t mean Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce can’t get a little supernatural activity action. Stay with me. Dogs and plants are a good time when added to the 9-5 mix, but a cubicle ghost? That’s hardly been done. I vote this spirit is snarky. Like a Williamsburg, Brooklyn or Silver Lake, CA hipster way before they even existed. Every time someone cheats on his wife late night, the ghost can say, “Boooring!” or “Been done!” If Don’s in a client presentation yapping on like, “These tires make you and your car feel like a man,” the ghost will start making puking noises and laughing. Then we’ll hear his/her disembodied voice say something you‘ll only hear out of the mouth of a 24-year-old trust fund baby who writes webisodes out of coffee shop. Example: “Hear that noise, boys? That’s me clapping forever because you guys make ads.” No one knows where it’s coming from. Everyone starts drinking more to escape the phantom. People start going mad. You, the viewers, are in on this little joke – it’s our favorite new character, the hipster ghost.

British musician Kate Nash just completed her sold out American tour for her third record, Girl Talk – a huge coup after having been dropped by her label and producing the album on her own. I met up with Kate, 25, a few hours before she rocked the stage at Music Hall of Williamsburg in Brooklyn, NY. Nash entered the room, all smiles. Her full mane of thick black hair has a blonde streak that runs off to the side, giving clues to her powerful duality as a person and an artist. Nash’s lyrics are so dark and powerful, she describes them as “a punch to the face,” but her inherent lightness glows. Dressed in all black, Nash has very open energy, and a politeness to her that is way beyond her years. Or perhaps because she’s so very British.

We chatted with Nash about her overcoming odds, how to handle cruelty, and her work with Plan U.S.A. /Protect A Girl, an organization that gives girls hope, resources and power in Africa.

LS: What motivated you to write ‘Girl Talk’? It’s all about female empowerment.

Nash: Really personal stuff. I got to a point where I learned that I have to put myself first. It took me a long time to realize that. I started to take care of myself and I didn’t give a f*** about what anyone thought about me anymore. Taking care of myself made me a nicer, better human. I had been treated really badly by someone who really didn’t love himself. You have to really love the f*** out of yourself in order to be great to other people. Look at Oprah, she loves herself and she’s one of the best humans ever.

LS: Well, she gives away free cars. I’d be her friend just for that and I don’t even drive. Anyway, the new album is a totally different vibe from your previous albums. I didn’t expect it. How would you describe it?

Nash: It was like therapy. I went through a lot – my friend died and I had other tough things happen. It was one of those transitional years that shapes you as a human. I just had to make this record. I wrote everything on the base, and that changed everything because it’s this loud, powerful instrument. It was a total release. I told my neighbor, I either write this album or go to a mental health clinic. Then I got dropped by my record label later in the year.

LS: Why? Do you think they weren’t ready for you to evolve?

Nash: It was never really explained to me. But I started my own record label, which I think is way cooler. With my own label I got to hand pick a team. There’s more challenges, but it’s worth it. When I got dropped, the record was made and I just wanted to get it out. Waiting for a new label would have been too long of a process. They would have only come in and wanted to make changes I didn’t.

LS: This way you own your own work. You’re not waiting around for a suit to walk in the room, wearing Converse and tell you to sound more like Justin Bieber. So, tell me about your trip to Africa and you work with ‘Plan U.S.A.: Protect A Girl’.

Nash: I went to a little village called Ho Ho in Ghana. I visited the elders, the Chiefs and the schools. Protect A Girl sets up programs for girls in developing nations. The particular program I signed up for is “Girls Making Media.” They learn how to use technology. We taught them about everything from sexism, to sexual assault, to hygiene. They then go into the villages and interview people. We’re selling merch on the tour that goes to fund the project. We’re trying to raise awareness as much as we can to get people to donate.

It was great to see the girls learn that they have options and hear them say, “I want to be a journalist.” There was one boy in the group who said, “I’m educating my parents now that girls can have careers and they’re not just supposed to be in the kitchen.”

I met up with Chloë Sevigny and her director M. Blash while they were in Austin promoting their latest indie, The Wait. Sevigny, an actress with the most solid hipster mythology – do Sassy Magazine or Kids ring a bell? – showed up, her skin glowing, wearing a miniskirt and 5” stiletto heels. You could totally imagine her pulling off this look even in a grocery store. Her director, M. Blash, is a handsome, gentle soul who kind of reminds me of Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands, sans the grey pallor and odd extremities. Both chatted with me about their latest project.

In the film, two sisters struggle with the prospect of keeping their recently deceased mother at home after a psychic informs them she will be resurrected. Now, an image of a dead loved one just hanging out in a Pottery Barn trundle bed is just disturbing. That’s exactly why this film is worth seeing. Some of the best writing makes you uncomfortable. You cringe; your body feels chills in the warmest of temperatures and you can’t look away.

Through all our banter about death, psychics, and psychedelics, something bigger struck me- how comfortable they are with each other. It’s their second film together. The two first collaborated on Lying, which Sevigny cites as one of her most rewarding opportunities as an artist.

These two don’t compete. They celebrate each other. I was there to talk about their film, but left struck by the PLP (platonic life partner) vibe they have. Here’s what I learned from them about genuine friendship and the types of friends you need to have in your life.

1. The importance of having a “work husband or wife.”

I asked them if they felt working together repeatedly was playing it safe.

Blash: Say you’re neurotic and gay like I am, safety is good. But creatively you can be unsafe. You have to remind yourself that if it feels natural, you should be doing it. There is a certain pressure on me to reach out and be doing other things, but what’s important to me working with Chloë and Jena (Malone) is having a family-like vibe.

Sevigny on their creative romance: Sometimes when you do TV you get a little beaten down by how much you’re contributing. With M, we collaborate and I can push things in a way and be a little crazy. Of course if M wanted to hire another actress I’d be fine with it, she laughed. I’m thinking he’d come back to me… at a later time. Some of my favorite filmmakers worked with the same actresses over and over again.

Everyone needs a work wife or husband that challenges them and brings out their unique strengths that get suppressed by the day-to-day grind. It’s crucial that it’s a sexless marriage. It can be girl on girl, man to man, without saying a damn thing about your sexuality. Take up with someone who has a different talent than yours, but the same end-goal. Sync up and make something you couldn’t do alone. Also, be sure to listen to and filter each other’s critiques without becoming an ego monster. Or your work partner could just be someone who makes you laugh when nothing seems funny, or your lunch buddy. While you two have each other’s backs– you can dish, complain, and advise each other on your work crushes. Because what’s a work marriage with out something on the side?

2. Be friends with people who have respect for women.

“M loves women – he actually has a tattoo you should see,” said Sevigny.

M flipped over his wrist revealing his tattoo that reads “GIRLS”. “I got it long before there was a show called Girls,” said Blash.

“I really hope that when people hear the word, ‘girls’ one doesn’t only conjure Lena Dunham. Because really…girls is a sex of humans,” said Sevigny. “I’ve only seen two episodes, but I do think it’s cool what she’s doing.”

The importance of girls sticking together is the only way women can get ahead. Ladies, being friends with boys who treat women as equals is also just as important. If you support other women in the office and in your personal life, you’re making a huge difference in that person’s life. You’re also a part of a greater thing, which is setting an example to that chick to treat other girls as well as you treat her. That builds to, guess what? You got it, a freaking society of females who live, love and laugh together. When you encounter a fellow woman or man who picks on your appearance or is only happy as long as you’re their subordinate, they are undermining your intelligence and process. There’s a saying in baseball: “Thanks for playing and I’ll see you in the spring.” But, you won’t be seeing this person in the spring, because by the time spring has sprung, you’ll be in the park sipping on lemonade or violating open container laws with a friend who makes you and your day shine.

As I rolled over in bed on day five of SXSW in Austin, Texas, I was fighting the sunlight hard. I peered at my Weight Watcher’s app that read, “16 breakfast tacos, bloody Mary, mimosa, steak taco,” then my friend Rachel’s text appeared on my phone. She was in New York City. “Lianne, put the flour tortilla down, Dave Grohl’s keynote at SXSW is at 11am today. Do not miss this.”

I didn’t know much about Dave Grohl besides the fact that he was a band member in Nirvana and is the frontman of The Foo Fighters. I’m a strict devotee of George Michael. (This is the man who taught me in the early ’80s that “guilty feet have got no rhythm”!) Could I find another musician as inspirational as George? After lugging myself, my face still caked in last night’s eye make-up, to the Austin Convention Center to hear Mr. Grohl speak, the answer is yes. I’ve never been happier to stand in a cavernous auditorium filled with hoards of people, some of whom had a lackadaisical attitude towards using deodorant, and be inspired by someone.

Here are some of the things Grohl taught me that reinforced my motivation.

1. No one is you and that is your biggest power.

We’ve all heard this sentiment before, but this quote from Grohl’s speech breaks it down:

“It’s YOUR VOICE. Cherish it. Respect it. Nurture it. Challenge it. Stretch it and scream until it’s f**king gone because everyone is blessed with at least that, and who knows how long it will last . . .”

AND, my absolute favorite:

“Who’s to say what’s a good voice, and what’s not a good voice? The Voice? Imagine Bob Dylan sitting there singing ‘Blowin’ in the Wind’ in front of Christina Aguilera.”

As soon as I heard these words, I was filled with the energy and enthusiasm of roughly 20 Baptist choirs. Grohl was talking about a singer’s voice, but you don’t have to belt on Broadway to have a voice. Your voice is your defining quality, your passion and your key opportunity to affecting this planet. Take as long as you need to figure out who you are and what turns you on. And when you do, don’t doubt yourself – just sing.

2. Don’t be afraid of not fitting in.

During his speech, Grohl freely admitted to having what some would deem “questionable taste in music.”

“I can truly say out loud that ‘Gangnam Style’ is one of my favorite f**king songs of the past decade. Is it any better or worse than the latest Atoms for Peace album? Hmmm… paging Pitchfork! Come in, come in, Pitchfork! We need you to help us determine the value of a song! Who f**king cares.”

Preach it, Dave Grohl! Mama hears you.

What is ‘cool’, anyway? Hipsters who wear lampshades as skirts and deadpan “ew” when they see you’re wearing a garment from The Limited Express? Maybe mall stores make you feel alive again. This is a vast culture. Take inspiration from where you want. Let your peers laugh at you for downloading Phil Collins remixes on your ‘Droid. People who design their lives to impress others are Ambien in human form: total sleepwalkers.

3. Give a damn about yourself.

Grohl said this early in his speech: “The Musician comes first.”

My friend Paul reminded me not too long ago of the first season of The Real World. This was back during the brief one-month window when reality TV was actually real. One cast member was an aspiring rapper named Heather. Heather went into the confessional amongst all the household drama of “Who is sleeping with whom?” and “Who called who fat and didn’t do the dishes?” and said, “Heather got to do Heather.” Putting yourself first doesn’t mean being selfish. It’s about taking care of yourself so you can be a better human being. A 2.0 version of you is way more equipped to help others in need. Take up yoga if you’re stressed. Ask for a big raise. Walk away from a relationship that is abusive or draining. Or just take a nap, for Christ’s sake.

At the age of 24, Jane Pratt created Sassy, a magazine for teenage girls. Still a young woman herself, Pratt was responsible for the magazine’s soaring success. Refusing to turn it into a cookie-cutter, recipe-style, droll publication, Sassy talked to chicks about their sexuality, fed their passion for music and womanhood in ways no other magazine had. To this day, Sassy reigns as one of the most iconic generational voice of young ladies. Unstoppable, Pratt went on to found the popular Jane Magazine. In May 2011, the same month HelloGiggles was launched, Jane came back for more, this time giving women a community on the web at xojane.com.

Jane rang us from her office in New York City to talk about her upcoming panel at SXSW. During our chat, she shared with us her three decades of knowledge gained being a fearless woman. Pratt’s voice is ever evolving and her messaging, unstoppable.

Lianne Stokes: You’re speaking at SXSW next week.

Jane Pratt: Yes, I honestly didn’t think I’d get picked so it’s really great. I could talk for a year about what I’ve been through and done and how it all translates into what I’m doing now. Now my focus is to condense it.

LS: One thing that’s so fascinating about you is that you keep popping up and reinventing yourself. How has that been as a process for you? Have you ever felt beaten down to the point of giving up?

Pratt: When I first moved to New York City many years ago, I ran a marathon. I hadn’t really trained for it. I just ran. I kept telling myself that I wasn’t going to stop. If you keep going you’re either going to do what you want to do, or you’re going to die trying to do it.

LS: There’s 50 Cent’s mantra, “Get rich or die trying.”

Pratt: Yeah, I’m not motivated by the ‘get rich part’, but I am driven to do the projects I want to do.

LS: I think that you have amazing perseverance. It’s easy to feel rejected and give up. You have an amazing fortitude that all women need to adopt.

Pratt: Thank you so much. What motivates me to do the kind of work that I do is to bring other women up. I know that it sounds archaic, but I feel there’s still this attitude that women should be competing with each other. Whether it’s on The Bachelor, for that one guy or in their careers, for that one high level position. I feel women are pinned against each other a lot. It’s so important to pull women up. Because when you can help women do what they want to do, it’s a success for all of us.

LS: When you create this friendly female environment, how do women react?

Pratt: A lot of times women are taken aback by having a group of women really support them and want to promote them as well as what they’re doing. The joy is when they get used to it. They start to assume that other women have their backs.

LS: It would have been easy for you to pander to the huge male demographic, but every magazine you’ve started has been for women.

Pratt: Yes, what I liked about Sassy, and Jane [Magazine] is that we had 15% male readership. I believe it’s about the same at xoJane. I think there’s something cool that you get to do something female driven, but then you have guys coming to read it where they’re kind of the outsiders, as opposed to most media which is male-focused.

LS: I feel like there are a lot of topics on xojane.com that are not just about being a woman, it’s raw, honest writing, and that’s where the male crossover comes in.

Pratt: Yes, women writing about their bodies, about their sexuality, about what they want and don’t want. They are able to write about it with no shame attached.

I travelled from New York City to West Hollywood to sit down with Rachel Kolar and Lauren Brown of He’s My Brother She’s My Sister. Just hours before their sold out show at The Troubadour, Kolar and Brown were completely relaxed; ready to talk about anything. The girls represent half the band whose musical genre is simply indefinable, their uniqueness is intoxicating. Watching them perform transports you to a whimsical place everyone should visit once and awhile.

Kolar, (vocals and percussion), Brown, (tap dancing drummer), and I chatted at The Troubadour about the Big Bang theory, Biggie Smalls, and the immense power of sisterhood.

RACHEL KOLAR: I think people think I’m slightly morbid because I have this theory, I convince people that we’re already dead. Which is a beautiful thing.

LIANNE STOKES: Oh, like one of the plot theories on LOST?

KOLAR: My boyfriend is obsessed with LOST now. I’ve never seen it. If you think about the Big Bang theory, the moment the synergy happened, the universe expanded in every which direction, so death is actually a form of expansion. It’s a form of contributing to evolution. The further you stretch in this lifetime, the further you move along in your evolution and genetic makeup. You can be totally fearless. Death isn’t scary because you’re already inhabiting that space.

LS: We might be in one level of death and then we die again. Not one of us knows where we go when we die. That’s what makes us human.

KOLAR: That’s what makes us distinctly human.

LS: How would you describe your musical style? Take for example, The Sheepdogs, they’re rock meets blues. You, I can’t define.

KOLAR: I like that.

LAUREN BROWN: We just do what we like doing. That’s the whole reason we do it. Rach and I don’t come from musical backgrounds so we’re constantly thinking about what we could bring to the table with live performance and writing.

KOLAR: We’re theater chicks, we met at NYU, so it’s not entirely musical. We’re doing a variety show as a band. We’re shooting the pilot this year.

LS: Who does most the writing?

KOLAR: My brother Rob and I. We work together. I’ll be driving in my car and almost every day a new song comes into my head. I start moving my body and think, that’s where the beat would hit. I want it to be like hip hop. I want when someone is listening to one of our songs whether it’s country or rock, to move.

LS: I still have my Biggie box set.

BROWN: I’m from Boston, so I’ve got you with Biggie.

KOLAR: I’m partial to Tupac.

LS:: [laughs] You see? It’s the East Coast/West Coast divide.

KOLAR: Did you know that Tupac is the most requested artist amongst inmates?

LS: That should be your goal.

KOLAR & BROWN: [laughs]

LS: So tonight you’re kicking off the tour for your first album. How’s that been?

BROWN: Tonight’s amazing. This is our first sold out show in L.A., all our friends are on the bill. We’re really grateful.

LS: How did you get to this place? Because you’re theater people, and you’re accomplishing what many musicians have strove for years for.

KOLAR: I think people focus too much on one thing. Lauren and I wanted to create an experimental theater movement in L.A. The theater in L.A. is crap, so we put on a show and infused L.A.’s amazing music scene into the show. We started to get involved in music that way. I was going out to Joshua Tree a lot, hanging out with this darker kind of spindrift, like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and the Dandy Warhols scene. It was a time where you imagine rock n’ roll in the 60’s and you think, “No, that didn’t happen.” There was a resurgence thing between Joshua Tree and Big Sur where it felt to me, really real. It was really good music, and nobody cared who was there. We were out in the desert. It was a really transformative time, and I thought, “Just do it.”
