Amy Poehler is many things. She’s a comedian, a producer, a writer, a wife, a mother, an Emmy-nominated actress and all-around incredible earthling. How does she do it? In the video below, Amy credits her ability to achieve a her work/life balance to her domestic workers. Amy is showing her support for the many women who take care of our children and our homes while we’re away at work and is standing up for their labor rights.
Currently, there is a bill being considered by the California state legislature (AB 889), that seeks to include the state’s domestic workforce in such labor protection laws as overtime pay and rest breaks. Poehler’s video is part of her collaboration with the National Domestic Workers Alliance, which is pushing the legislation.
Perhaps we should add humble genius and angel to the above list?

I think she’s fabulous. As someone who worked as a nanny in California, I was amazed by how many parents refused to pay on the books and follow the law. I love that Amy is so candid about the fact that she HAS help and isn’t afraid to call a nanny a nanny. Too many people call their full-time nannies, “babysitters,” and as someone who’s worked in that profession, it’s kind of demeaning.
