OH BOY, the new trailer for American Gods is here, and it is i-n-t-e-n-s-e, y’all. The series, which is based on a fantasy novel of the same name by Neil Gaiman, is set to premiere next month on Starz, and we’re quaking in our ankle boots waiting for the carnage to begin.
The show is set in a world where gods exist and gain strength when people believe in them. New gods rise as people’s values change, and old gods die off as they become less relevant. In the trailer, we see the beginnings of an epic battle between the old and new gods — and it is bloody.
Created by Bryan Fuller (Dead Like Me, Hannibal) and Michael Green (Heroes), the series stars The 100‘s Ricky Whittle as Shadow Moon, a recently released convict who accepts a job as a bodyguard after his release from prison, and finds himself caught up in a bizarre new world.
The series is just right for the current political climate — sharply divided along ideological lines (indeed, two of the new gods are called Media and Technology). The show is set firmly in the United States, too — not in some far-off fantasy world — so its messages around morals and human nature feel particularly close to home.
Gaiman said in an interview last year that the first 10 episodes of the series only cover the first third of his novel (!!), so we can assume there’s plenty more to come if this season goes well. Tune in April 30th at 9 p.m. EST on Starz to see how American Gods begins!
