Notes From The Powder Room 3 Tips for Staying Hot in the Heat
Cézanne Colvin

Short of dying, is there anything worse than walking around during whatever is left of this summer with dry skin, chapped lips and a melty face?

I’m being a little dramatic, but I think we can all agree that the answer is more or less no.

GOODBYE, DRY SKIN

Yes To is a hair and skin product line that mixes “legendary minerals” from the Dead Sea with organic fruits and vegetables to bring you several collections: Yes To Carrots, Yes To Tomatoes and Yes to Cucumbers. Since I never say yes to carrots on my plate, I figured I’d be agreeable for once and say yes to it on my skin with Yes To Carrots Super Rich Body Butter.

I know, I know. Body butter. The stuff that takes forever to rub in, leaves a weird film on your leather seats and makes you look like you just walked off the set of a really sexist music video. Is this really a product we should get behind?

Absolutely. I don’t know what legendary minerals the Dead Sea has to offer us but I’m not questioning it because this is like body butter, reloaded. My skin soaked it up in seconds, there was absolutely no residue and I feel like a newborn baby. Bonus: despite being made with organic carrots, I don’t smell like a salad.

SEE YA, CHAPPED LIPS

After netting significant sun time, sometimes our lips have had enough and can’t stand another night of being coated in goopy lipgloss or drying lipsticks. Even still, we don’t want to march around with pale lips because even if our faces are over our vanity, we aren’t, am I right?

This is where Burt’s Bees Rose Tinted Lip Balm comes in handy.

Unlike other tinted balms, it’s not waxy and the color is very true-to-advertising. It moisturizes your lips, gives you a pretty and surprisingly long-lasting color and it also smells really good if you’re into that sort of thing (I am).

TTYN, MELTY FACE

Like Rebecca Black, you’ve gotta get down on Friday. It’s a given. But between the fact that there’s forty people stuffed into a studio apartment party also trying to get down and the small issue that it’s 90 degrees out, there are only so many minutes that can pass until your foundation trickles into your eyeshadow and the two of them snowball down your face, leaving you looking like a hot mess before 9:30 rolls around. I’ve been there, and I’ve also been up the next morning untagging the evidence.

Luckily, there’s Urban Decay’s All Nighter, a long-lasting make-up setting spray.

Tip: I picked up the sample size from Sephora for a little less than half the regular cost.

According to Urban Decay, a few spritzes guarantees you 16 hours of no-smudge time. While I haven’t needed that sort of insurance yet, I’ve used it for long shifts at work, sweaty bowling dates and humid nights out with high success rates. Instead of being met with a greasy ghost of my made-up past in the mirror, this stuff keeps me sort-of-sexy all night long. (I say sort-of-sexy because it’s not a miracle worker.)

Do you have any tips for staying hot in the heat? Do your knees feel like angel wings? Are your lips kissable pillows of splendor? And what are you doing about your melty face?

  1. Went out and bought BOTH the Lip Balm and the body butter today!!! LOVE both, thank you so much!!

  2. Is it just me or do you always mention bowling?

  3. I abso-fricking-lutely love the Burt’s Bees tinted lip balms. As advertised, it’s got just enough color and is real natural stuff that doesn’t feel gross and waxy. I even love the handy little cardboard tube it comes in which let’s me shove it in a back pocket or let it rattle around at the botton of my purse without having to worry the cap will fall off – leaving lip balm streaks all over my stuff and bits of fuzz and tobacco crumbles all over my lip balm. I can’t recommend it enough.

Sadly, it does not love me. After a week of wearing it religiously, I started to realize my lips felt more chapped than before and were starting to get scaly and uncomfortable. I stopped using the Burt’s – just in case. Soon enough, the crackly-pealy situation disappeared. I guess I suffered from denial and amnesia and I started using the stuff again, immediately I broke out even worse. It was like soraisis on my mouth, pretty nasty. I showed my doc and she pointed out the Burt’s right away. I have a natural alergy to bee stings and it’s made with bee’s wax. So the doc said, this could be the reason. Sucky, because I love it so.

  4. Woot!I’ll be sure to look these things up. I live south of Houston and haven’t been able to wear much makeup recently due to the high meltability factor.

  5. Eye shadow primer and oil blot sheets work wonders

  6. Yes to Carrots also makes the best hand cream I’ve ever tried. It’s my saviour in the winter.

  7. can’t wait to get my hands on that UD spray. i’ve been using dr. brandt’s pores no more and it doesn’t cut it since i am 96% grease above my eyebrows.

  8. Yes to Tomatoes is amazing. i have combination skin and it works perfect to keep my breakouts under control without drying my face.

  9. I love your notes from the powder room. Seriously. Love. It. Always informative with a hint of sass, & that’s what I’m all about!

  10. I love Yes To products! I swear by their Yes To Carrots Eye C clearly eye cream and the Yes To Tomatoes face mask is amazing.

As for keeping hot in the heat, as long as keep up my skincare routine, I’m fine. And to keep cool, I’ve taken a cue from the Japanese with cute fans.

  11. Wish we had some warm weather here.
