When asked their favorite food, most kids will say pizza, because what’s not to love about pizza? Not only is it delicious, filling and comforting, it’s often associated with doing something enjoyable. People typically order pizzas when they’re hanging around people they like, and likable people are usually enjoyable. As kids grow up, their love of pizza usually carries over into adulthood, unless something goes terribly wrong (I’ve never heard of pizza causing emotional pain, but anything’s possible). Some people prefer basic pizza toppings like cheese, pepperoni, mushrooms, green peppers and maybe even pineapple if things are getting wild, while others branch out and enjoy more unique pizza toppings.

Here’s a list of underrated pizza toppings that you may or may not have tried, but probably should:

1. Fried Egg

Eggs make everything better. Okay, they make some things better. Unless you don’t like eggs, then they don’t make anything better. But if you DO like eggs, they definitely make pizza better. Add a fried egg to a basic cheese pizza, and it’s instantly more delicious. It’ll be a little messier than the average pizza, but the average pizza doesn’t have fried eggs as a topping.

2. Shrimp

If you love pizza and shrimp, you are guaranteed by the Shrimp Pizza Organization of the World (the SPOW) to like pizza and shrimp together. If you’ve never tried it, you will be happy when you do. And I’m sure the shrimp wouldn’t be happy they dedicated their lives to such a great cause.

3. Ground beef 

Can’t decide if you want a burger or pizza? Have both! Adding ground beef onto a cheese pizza is essentially like eating a cheeseburger. A cheesepizzaburger. Cheeseburgers and pizza are two major food groups in America, so it just makes sense to combine them into one. It’s a timesaver, really.

4. Tofu

A tofu topping is a great way for vegetarians to get some extra protein and calcium, but also a great way for everyone to get some extra deliciousness. Tofu is known for its ability to absorb different flavors, so add some spices and marinade to bring it to its full potential.

5. Jalapeño

Want to kick it up a notch? Or twelve notches? Jalapeños will certainly do the trick. These little guys sprinkled on a cheese pizza will create a mouth fiesta. Be sure to check the hotness level of the jalapeño before jumping in, as some are hotter than others. You can also try stuffing the jalapeños with cheese or pepperoni for some added taste bud pleasure.

6. Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are good with or without pizza, but since pizza is magic and makes everything better, let’s not think about them without pizza. Sweet potatoes are super healthy. They’re full of beta carotene and vitamin A. Try adding kale, caramelized onions and some shredded fontina or parmesan cheese for added flavor. If you want an even healthier version, you can make the dough out of sweet potatoes!

7. Lobster 

You won’t find this one at your local fast food pizza chain, but most gourmet pizza and lobster restaurants offer it. Lobster is on the more expensive side of the toppings, but so worth it. You won’t even need a bib.

8. Spinach and Artichoke

Who needs spinach and artichoke dip when you can have spinach and artichoke pizza? It’s just like the dip, only less steps. With the dip, you have to find something to dip, dip it and then take a bite. With the pizza, you just take a bite. One easy step.

9. Tex-Mex 

It’s all the fixing of a taco… on a pizza! Add pepper jack cheese, corn, salsa, beans, avocado, cilantro, and throw in some taco seasoning. I don’t actually know if this exists, but let’s make it exist.

10. Bacon and scrambled eggs

Have you ever had pizza for breakfast? Of course you have. I forgot who I was talking to for a second. Try adding bacon and scrambled eggs to your breakfast pizza and then high five yourself, because bacon is the Brad Pitt of food, and scrambled eggs are its Angelina.

11. Figs

Fresh figs are an excellent source of dietary fiber and potassium. Who doesn’t want to add fresh little fruit balls of health onto their pizza? Throw on some rosemary, goat cheese and arugula, and you’ve got yourself a pizza that pineapple would be jealous of.

12. S’mores 

No sauce and cheese on this one. Use marshmallow fluff in place of sauce, and top it with chocolate squares, graham cracker pieces and marshmallows. Make sure not to place the dough in direct heat so it doesn’t burn before the toppings melt (that warning was mostly for me). This dessert pizza is great for kids and adults who love happiness.

  4. One of my students brought in Nutella pizza for us yesterday, and I can’t stop thinking about it. You spread Nutella on pizza dough, fold the dough into a calzone-like shape, bake it, then dust it with powdered sugar. Not on a diet, but totally delicious.

  5. Oh god… Taco Pizza is my favorite…. Drool.
